The novel Esperanza Rising is a perfect easy read for a middle schooler. I thought the story was very heartwarming and is centered around family but it was a little too predictable for my taste; that is why I say it is perfect for middle school. The story starts off quickly with a tragedy that leaves a young girl, her mother, and her grandmother to start a new lives for themselves. I liked the idea that family comes before anything and that was heavily expressed in the novel. It shows that how in one day your life can completely change and you can lose everything. Esperanza's journey was a tough one but in time she learned how hard work can go a long way and the struggles of starting a new life in an unfamiliar place where you are no longer treated the way you have been your entire life. Everything Esperanza ever knew was changed in a blink of an eye. I thought this novel was very cute to say the least but definitely your typical coming of age story.
