Liz (liz_the_librarian) I am thankful for tons of things, but I want to focus on books right now. Books got me through some tough times growing up. I was a pretty shy kid in middle and high school, and books made it possible for me to live the adventures of fantasy novels, to fall in love with the leading man in a teen book about love and loss, to explore distant universes and more.

Not only that, but books have made me more worldly, intelligent and open-minded. Without books, I wouldn't be the person I am today.

In what ways are you thankful for books? And don't forget to share what you're reading this week!

I'm reading: A Short History of Nearly Everything, The Bat (for the November challenge) and Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography.

Ingrid Hurst (bookrdr) | 285 comments Every time we moved with the military, the first place I searched out was the library. When I had books to read, it didn't matter that I didn't have friends yet. Books never let me down & are always there for me. After my son's Asperger's diagnosis, I had a hard time coping with the stress of all the therapies he needed to get to & helping him manage his life. I had gotten away from reading. I wasn't able to sleep well from all of the stress & I got back into reading to ease my mind away from the stress of the day. It helped me be a better mom.
Right now, I am reading a mindless book that I don't even know the title too. :). Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I am thankful for books! I had similar experiences as child to Liz. I was shy and quiet, but books gave me a place to escape where I could be the brave, outgoing heroine.

I just finished reading Birth House by Ami McKay and I am currently listening to Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. I just picked up The Midwife of Hope River at the library and I am looking forward to reading it during lunch.

Pattie Babbitt Twilight (Twilight, #1) by Stephenie Meyer Help for the Haunted by John Searles I am thankful for audiobooks because they make my hour long commute tollerable and even enjoyable every day! Right now I am getting my Edward and Bella fix by re-listening to Twilight. I am also scaring myself silly reading "Help for the Haunted" which is described on the cover as a combo Stephen King and John Irving book. Good so far, but I can only read a chapter at a time as my reading time tends to be at night and I don't want to scare myself too much right before bed. :)

message 5: by Jodie (new)

Jodie Reha I still remember reading "The Nun's Story" and wanting to be a nun. I would read books and want to be the characters. Books were where I could dream about the life I wanted. I can't remember a time I didn't love to read. Reading provides me an escape, a solution, an aspiration, a faith, whatever it is I need at the time.

Right now I have three books going: Stephen King's "Revival" (was really into it at first, now kind of slowed down), Jan Karon's "Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good" (I love her quiet, peaceful way of writing about people) and Sophie Kinsella's "Shopaholic to the Stars" (quick, funny read; I love this series!).

Kyra Hay | 41 comments I was shy throughout my childhood as well and enjoyed the escape that reading books provided. I am no longer as reserved but my love for books remains! I am currently reading, The Impossible Knife of Memory by Laurie Halse Anderson; It's very good so far!

Vivian | 54 comments I can't remember when I did not love books! I've always been a big reader & wish I had more time. They have always been my friends-taking me places I could only dream about.

Currently I am reading Revival by Stephen King & To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Almost finished with both so looking for something else.

I FINALLY finished the Song Of Ice & Fire series! Can't wait for the next book in that!
