Hello everyone. I was sorting through my library recently and came across the book given to my class (OC '05) as preparation for our time at Oberlin. It was Stephen Carter's "Civility." I found the essential messages to be important, but it was couched in a repetitious and flat writing style. I spent that summer slogging my way through the book. (I don't understand how Carter got a book deal for his works of fiction...!)
So I want to hear from other Obies about the books that defined their experience at Oberlin, the books that would prepare future first-years, and the books that have defined your post-Oberlin experience.
