'Bless Me, Ultima,' follows Antonio Márez, a six year old, Mexican-American boy, and begins when his grandmother, Ultima comes to stay with them. Antonio is just beginning the process of getting his first communion when he becomes preoccupied with the idea of good and evil in the world. As the novel develops, he begins to doubt his parents, and the teachings of the Catholic church, wondering of the possibility of other gods. Stories of faith and his people, told by Ultima, guide his journey in discovering where his beliefs lie. Through her, he learns to accept the possibilities of things unknown, and be more open about things beyond him. Would Antonio still have had his struggle of faith if it wasn't for Ultima?
