Diana | 13 comments The same author also wrote “Five for Sorrow, Ten for Joy”, also about nuns, set in postwar France. Very good.

sammi_reads (samtheseahippie) | 21 comments The Sisterhood is a historical fiction novel set around a convent. It doesn't get into daily life but it's very interesting. Set during the Spanish Inquisition.

The Nun by Denis Diderot

"A novel mingling mysticism, madness, sadistic cruelty and nascent sexuality, it gives a scathing insight into the effects of forced vocations and the unnatural life of the convent."

Peter Meilinger | 469 comments Probably not quite what you're looking for, but Good Behavior by Donald Westlake is one of a series of books about John Dortmunder, the unluckiest thief in the world. While running away from the police one night he crashes into an urban nunnery. The good sisters agree not to rat him out if he will rescue one of their number who has been kidnapped by her family.

Most of the book is from the point of view of Dortmunder or one of the other thieves, but there are also scenes from the kidnapped nun's point of view, as she tries to escape from the penthouse apartment her father has confined her to while she is to be "deprogrammed" of her religious convictions.

Patrick, you need to start a new thread for your book, in the UNSOLVED folder.

Rachel B (rachel36) | 54 comments I know it was already mentioned, but I really enjoyed In This House of Brede.

Incidentally, I'm always on the lookout for fiction about nuns, also. :)

I just stumbled across this and realised I have to read it. :)

message 31: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Love | 1518 comments While it's not about a nun/religious sister, the main character spends much of her life living in a convent. Castles from Cobwebs

message 34: by Lori (new)

Lori S. | 15 comments A Nun in the Closet is an excellent humorous mystery about three nuns from a cloistered group moving into a cottage the group has been left as a donation. They run into hippies, gangsters, a Buddhist, and g men, but are triumphant and solve the mystery. From the late sixties or early seventies.
