Historical fantasy is a fun genre to explore. If you aren't familiar with it, historical fantasy is a sub-genre of fantasy that encompasses the Middle Ages, as well as sometimes other eras, and simply represents fictitious versions of historic events.

Some suggestions:

His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden
The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows
The Inquisitor's Tale: Or, the Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog by Adam Gidwitz

Nikki (mnnikki) | 164 comments I've been meaning to read The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker for ages. It's written by a friend of a friend & comes highly recommended! I'll definitely pick that one for this category.

It's one of my favorite books from this year. It's such a beautifully written story. I have heard that their is a sequel in the works, but no release date as of yet.

Karen | 76 comments I just completed the enthralling story The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I definitely recommend it.

Lindsay | 26 comments I read Beloved by Toni Morrison. I didn’t even realize it would fit this category before I read it. Really great book, but definitely a heavier read.
