Ok so basically in this book a little girl and her neighbor or something don't get along but then the main character's mom babysits the other little girl and takes both the girls on a trip to the mall and to a museum where they have a Phar Lap exhibit then the little girls get lost from the mom and they end up taking the train home. I tried google but no luck :(

Was this a picture book for children or teens?Anything about the cover?
Part of a series?
Time period/location story takes place?
It was a children's book but it was also a chapter book. Just a short one. I don't remember what the cover looked like. The time period. Well idk. Maybe 80s or 90s. I'm not sure I just remember the storyline. It's killing me!
this is really bugging me because i've read the damn book and i can't remember it...i would have read it in late elementary school/middle school - so early 90's (I started high school in 1995)
Dee exactly! I'm so frustrated with myself about it haha. I read it a little later maybe in the early 2000s but I figured it must have been older than that. I don't even remember either of the little girls' names.
I remember one of them had a box with playing cards that was really cool or something and the other girl was jealous. These girls really disliked wag other! Lol
yes and the mom of one of the girl's was pregnant - i thought - and there was teasing going on, because the little girl's room was now a little boy's room - or am i going nuts!
Hahahahaha I don't think they were pregnant because they were about 10-11 years old I think. Oh no I hope we've been talking about the same book this whole time
Hahahaha maybe. I can't even remember why but I think you're right. I just remember that the mom who took them to the mall are a salad at the food court and ate it slow because she was on a diet and was trying to trick her body into believing it was eating a large meal. Hahahahahaha
yep - i remember that too and the girls got separated from the mom at the museum and took the train (?) home by themselves, maybe....
Argh yes! They got lost somehow and the main character took the little girl to see phar lap because her mom didn't let her because she was acting up throwing fits. Then when they got separated she said lets go see phar lap and they got lost in the mall. And you're right they took the train home alone! So scary!
i just sent an email to a australian children's literature website to see if they knew - i trolled through several of the australia GR listopias, but none of the books caught my eye
Sonia, I added plot details to the topic header. Feel free to update it using the small "edit" link on the desktop website (not the mobile app).
What's the location - country, region, big city/small town?

I don't remember where they lived or anything like that. All I remember still, is the details in the description I gave four years ago. I cannot believe we still haven't found that book! I appreciate everyone who has racked their brain and put any effort at all in trying to find this book! Let's not give up, 'kay? Hahaha
Wait I remembered something else so when they went to buy the train tickets alone the main character was like, "All I know is that when my mom buys our train tickets she says 'half-fare' for me because I'm a kid" or whatever, so she told the train station ticket person 'half-fare' when they bought their tickets to go home. Also, when they finally got home the phone was ringing or rang as soon as they walked in and the mom was calling and worried and she was like "Mom we made it home all by ourselves," & the mom was all proud or whatever. That's it...
they lived in Sydney or Melbourne Australia (or just outside it) - this book continues to be the bane of my existance because I recall everything but the title sooo vividly
I'm in the exact same situation as you, Dee! Like how do I remember what the mom ate? The specific type of train ticket she bought? But not the title, author, or even the girls' names?? I'm so mad.
i remember her mom eating her salad really slow because it helped with losing weight....haha! this s dumb!
Dee if you find this book I will seriously send you flowers lol you have been in this investigative journey with me for YEARS!!!
