Let’s play Classics Bingo 2015!!!

I love reading challenges because they inspire me to whittle away my TBR stack, and also because they encourage me to read books I might not have discovered on my own. So let’s discover some more great classics together and have fun doing it! Thanks to Tytti for suggesting this game, and also to Tytti, Melanti, and Elsbeth for contributing suggestions. Many thanks to Renato for creating our Bingo card image.

This game is going to focus on literary classics. Read a classic that fits the description of a square, and mark that square off. Each book can be applied to only one square, even if it fulfills the requirements of multiple squares. All books read to mark off squares must be completed in 2015.

We have several levels of play, so there are several ways to win!

Level One Bingo
Four Corners: Mark off the four outside corners of the Bingo board.
Five-in-a-Row: Mark off five squares in a row. This can be done horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Level Two Bingo
Small Box: Mark off all the 9 inner squares of the board (including the free square).

Level Three Bingo
Outside Box: Mark off all 16 of the outer squares.

Level Four Bingo
Blackout! Mark off all the squares of the board.

Clarifications and Suggestions:

Prize Winner Squares
★ Written by Nobel Laureate (B1): Read any book that was written by a Nobel Prize-winning author. List of Nobel Laureates
★ Winner of a Foreign Literary Prize (B5): Read any book that was awarded a literary prize of a country/region that is not the one you live in.
★ Literary Prize of Your Country or Region (O1): Read any book that was awarded a literary prize of the country or region you live in.
★ Prize-winning Female Author (O5): Read any book that was written by a female author and has won any literary prize.

References for literary prizes:
Goodreads
Wikipedia

Geographical Classic Squares: Africa (B3), The Americas (N1), Asia or Oceania (O3), Europe (N5)
★ Read a classic that is either set in the given geographical area, or is written by an author native to that geographical area.

Goodreads Places: Books categorized by setting
Wikipedia: List of Novelists by Nationality

Genre Classic Squares: Comedy/Humor or Satire (B2), Romance (B4), Science Fiction or Horror (I3), Childrens (N4), Fantasy or Adventure (G3), Historical (History or Historical Fiction) (O2), Mystery (O4)
★ Read a classic that has been shelved on Goodreads with the specified genre. (Look on the right side of a book’s Goodreads page for its listed genres.) Goodreads genre shelving may not follow the strict technical rules for which genres a given work belongs in, but this more relaxed rule will allow a greater variety of books to choose from.

Here are just a few examples of the many classics that could be used for these genre-oriented squares: Moby-Dick; or, The Whale, Life on the Mississippi, Pride and Prejudice, Out of Africa, The Moonstone, The Time Machine, A Tale of Two Cities, A Clockwork Orange, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Great Gatsby, Love in the Time of Cholera, Dead Souls, Little Women, Catch-22, Breakfast of Champions

*A separate thread for questions and game discussion has been added here.

Happy reading!!!

And I have a question: I suppose there is nothing against reading an awarded non-fiction book?

Sure, I can make another thread for questions and discussion of the game. Regarding your second question, I think non-fiction is fine. As long as a book meets the requirement of a given square, feel free to be as creative as you'd like with your book choices!

Sorry, no, the game rules require that you use only books that you finished reading in 2015.

If you REread a book in 2015, then you can certainly use it for your bingo card.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Christine, thank you for clearing this up.

I'm pretty sure our Mod's will answer: of course! (it is always good to bring in 'new' books, which can be put on the group shelve as well! Part of the fun is, seeing what other people have read, to get new ideas!).

Elsbeth is correct! As long as a book meets the requirements of a square, you can choose any book that interests you.
