This book attempts to tell the story of that wife and family.

The story is told from the perspective of a grandmother (Jim's wife) sharing stories with her granddaughter. The grandmother was born in slavery, the granddaughter born free after the Civil War.

A couple years ago I read Counternarratives by John Keene - a book of short stories which included an account of Jim. It was very short, and another reader here on GR suggested My Jim as an additional book to read about Jim.

Of course, Jim is a fictional character, so there's no one "right" story. But this was an interesting (and honestly pretty grim) look at what his back-story may have been.
