May I recommend Suddenly at His Residence or The Glass Sided Ant's Nest. I hope these meet with requirements.

Ooh, yes, a Peter Dickinson! I'll vote for The Glass-Sided Ants' Nest. Read it many years ago; always enjoy his distinctive insights into a wide range of characters & settings & his imaginative plots.

Any of the three that have been mentioned so far would be great as far as I'm concerned. I haven't read any of them and they all sound like fun.
I'd like to recommend the classic She Shall Have Murder, by Delano Ames. Dagobert and Jane give Nick and Nora a run for their money. Hardly a page that doesn't make me laugh, but a good tense denouement too, and very atmospheric. But Peter Dickinson is great too!
Sandra wrote: "The Stately Home Murder by Catherine Aird"I'll second this one. C D (Seedy) Sloane is one of my favorite guilty pleasures.
