Hi Karen! Hope your new year has started out great :) Mine has been so busy - in and out of work. So making time to read has been hard - if I don't do it in the beginning of my day I tend to run out of time because then I'm left with "Huh, I could get 5 or 6 hours of sleep for work tomorrow....or I could read..." and I'm normally responsible lol! So I'm left not reading anything for the day D:

Other than that I'm loving Patricia Briggs' books - she's an amazing urban fantasy author!

What about you?

message 14: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) | 2108 comments I like Briggs as well. I think I have only read the first two books in the Mercy Thompson series. I need to remedy that.

Right now I am reading The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang, which is really good. I saw a review for it on Booktube, and decided to try Wang's books. I started with the first two Theonite books, which I am really glad I did.

message 15: by Leticia (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) I heard that The Sword of Kaigen is indeed good. It's in my TBR too.
I started the year reading an anthology, usually I take longer to read anthologies than novels, but now I'm finished.

I finished the book wanting more, it's that good.

Karen (karinlib) | 2108 comments Everyone is doing great in January! Do you find that you read more in the winter?

My biggest problem this month seems to be keeping to the books I plan to read, in other words, I keep changing the plan. I'll start one book, then switch to another book, by the end of the week, I am reading a third book. In the end I have completely forgotten about the first book.

I have found myself reading more winter, romantic, cozy books in the winter. In the summer I've been finding myself reading more beachy things or stories set on an island.

I think it has to do with me really trying to live seasonally. I've been doing the same thing with food. In the summer eating more fruits and smoothies and in the winter going more for soups and comfort food.

Leticia (leticiatoraci) I was also in need of a light, romantic read and it was this: Dream a Little Dream (The Silver Trilogy, #1) by Kerstin Gier

Hi Leticia, Did you read Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier? I was wondering how the two series compared. I like her world building.

Leticia (leticiatoraci) I read the Ruby Red series too. They are very similar, the only difference is that Ruby Red has to do with time travel and Dream a little dream with dreams. Most elements are quite the same, but since I like the author's light style it's OK.

Thanks Leticia, I think I will put that on my list.

Leane, I like what you said about living seasonally and with food. I think I pretty much do the same thing, except when the thermometer reaches 100 for a few days, I reach for books with blizzards in them.

Absolutely! Who wants to read about someone sweltering away on an island when the humidity is unbearable and the temps are cause for concern?!
I feel the same way when it's freezing out. An occasionally story that takes place on an island is just the thing to take away the winter blues!

I recently read Shelter in Place, which was a great story. It took place in Maine, part of it on an island. I enjoyed the descriptions of the island through all the seasons.

Eating seasonally has been really nice: you're eating food in season, which usually means fresh and less expensive. It also means I look forward to what each season brings and enjoy the season I'm in now. This year I really focused on making different soups and trying ones I've never made before. (Borscht and clam chowder.)

Karen (karinlib) | 2108 comments Shelter in Place sounds great! Between you and me, I have about 10 Nora Roberts books I need to read before I buy another one. I don't think I have read a book by her that I didn't like.

What kind of Clam Chowder, New England or Manhattan? Personally, I like both.

I have 6 Nora books sitting in my pile right now! I really enjoy her books!

I made New England but I'm with you, both are good! I may have to try making Manhattan next time.
I also like to make extra and freeze them. Makes lunches/dinners so easy later on. Especially when I don't feel like cooking.

Karen (karinlib) | 2108 comments Hi everyone,

We are down to the last few days of January, so has it been a good month for reading? It definitely has been for me. I was able to read two classics that had been on my radar for a very long time.

I can't believe the month is about to be over! Are we really a month into 2020 already?
You did really good this month, Karen!

Thank you! I'm trying to start out strong but also take the time to enjoy the stories too.
