Winter is when the moon reigns supreme in the sky, with our short days and long nights...
In celebration of the moons magic, this mini challenge requires you to read 1 book that contains magic of any sort! This runs from January 1st till March 20th, the spring equinox!

Claire (zebraclaire) | 47 comments Love this idea!

Tamora Pierce has been a favorite of mine since I was ~10 years old, and she published a book centering on the youth of my favorite magic-wielding character recently, Tempests and Slaughter! Planning to read it in February :)

Brenda, that's a great choice! The story is really interesting, and I love the magic system! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Claire, sounds like a really good book! I have actually never read anything by Tamora Pierce, I think I need to change that LOL!

I absolutely love this series! It's one of the few series where I've both read and listened to.

message 31: by Claire (new)

Claire (zebraclaire) | 47 comments So, just to add, before I got to the Tamora Pierce book I was intending to read, my mom sent me the entire Inkeeper's Chronicles Series by Ilona Andrews (starting with Clean Sweep) and I read them all, haha. Swept me away for a few days, a very different/unique magic system and new twist on the old vampire/werewolf theme.

message 32: by Tr1sha (new)

Tr1sha | 832 comments I read The Hanging Tree by Ben Aaronovitch. It’s fantasy & magic, set in London. But don’t start with this, it’s part of a series where the background stories of various characters develop even though each book has its own story. (The first book is Rivers of London.)

message 33: by Eileen (new)

Eileen | 1859 comments Trisha, I've been meaning to read the Rivers of London series for a long time now! I may have to put them in the queue for this year....what do you think of the series?

Tr1sha | 832 comments Eileen wrote: "Trisha, I've been meaning to read the Rivers of London series for a long time now! I may have to put them in the queue for this year....what do you think of the series?"

I started the series because a friend told me about them & had met the author when he gave a talk at her local library. I enjoy them - but still think the first one was best. Not sure if you will like them as much. Although there’s fantasy & magic, parts of London are described brilliantly & in some scenes I can visualise exactly where things are happening. There is also quite a bit of humour - but it feels a very specific humour that Londoners would relate to, sometimes with quite obscure references. Strangely, of the books I’ve read so far, the one I liked least was one that moved out of London for part of the story.

Sorry, I don’t intend to sound negative - you may enjoy the series more than I do, as I know you read lots of fantasy. I’m trying to be realistic. Recently I’ve read some books by authors from other countries & really struggled with obscure references that make no sense to me, so I’m wary of recommending books that others may find put them in a similar situation. It isn’t a nationality “thing”, it’s more about specific locations.

I’d suggest you try book 1 & see what you think about it before deciding whether to read more. (Be careful, there are lots of novellas, some graphic novels etc in addition to the actual series.)

Hope this helps. I’ll be interested to know your opinions.

message 35: by Eileen (new)

Eileen | 1859 comments Okay, that helps! Some things that are "British" I totally love and others don't click. It honestly just depends on the story and the author. So yeah, I'll give the first one a try one of these days and let you know what I think.

message 36: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 6 comments For this challenge I read The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates. There is a sense of "magic" to this book and it's really beautiful and well done. Truly breathtaking and such a wonderful book. Loved it!

I forgot about this series!! Read the first one but that's it. I should circle back, thanks!

message 38: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey I read Training Camp (Wizenard, #1) by Kobe Bryant 1/26/20 - 2/8/20, 5* which was different for me because I'm not a big basketball fan. But I enjoyed this book.

There is a cafe with a seat which transports you to the past or present. The book included 4 such instances which brought forth the nuances of relationships. Amazing indeed!
