Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments I think I can manage, but let's wait and see. I'm not going to plan my books, I just read what I fancy.

Happy reading in 2020!

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments I'm going to start my first book for this: Tauben fliegen auf by Melinda Nadj Abonji. I wanted to read this for ages.

Ah, I really enjoyed that one!

I also really liked this one :) Wonder if it will be another case of a book Britta and I like and you are just "so-so" about

message 7: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments I don't think it will always be the case! :)

message 8: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments I have finished my first book. It was only a novella, but I have to blame Stefan Zweig for that, I could have done with more of this book. I've read Schachnovelle and Zweig is one of my favourite German speaking authors (he was Austrian), so this was a re-read for me and I certainly recommend it, even if it is not my favourite book by him.

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Finished my second book.
Tauben fliegen auf
I really recommend it, but don't expect a straight forward narration and a lot of plot.

Glad you enjoyed it, I really loved that one as well! (And I added it to our Female-Authors-bookshelf)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments :)

message 12: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Third book finished:
The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate – Discoveries from a Secret World by Peter Wohlleben.
Wasn't overwhelmed by it and the writing style is really basic, but it was a good companion to The Overstory by Richard Powers, which I'm still reading.

message 13: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments The fourth one is Esther Kinsky's River.

message 15: by Johanna (new)

message 16: by Amelia (new)

message 17: by Johanna (new)

Schon danke.

message 18: by Amelia (new)

message 19: by Johanna (new)

Johanna (johanna_paulina) Danke, ich schaue mal.

message 20: by Amelia (last edited Jul 05, 2020 08:29AM) (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Picked up poetry and lyrical prose this time. I've read Die Kunst an nichts zu glauben by Raoul Schrott.

message 21: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments And, yeah, I've finished level one!

message 22: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Finished my first Heinrich Böll since school and loved it.
Irisches Tagebuch

message 23: by Amelia (new)

Not really a novel and only funny for insiders.

message 24: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments My 8th book done. I'm slow, but at least I'm making progress. Life, you know.
I've read Geschichten mit Marianne by the Austrian author Xaver Bayer. Weird, but in a way fascinating.

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments GRM: Brainfuck by Sibylle Berg.
I enjoyed all the anger, but overall it wasn't as good as I expected it to be when I started it.

message 26: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Die Infantin trägt den Scheitel links by Helena Adler.

message 27: by Amelia (last edited Aug 30, 2020 10:33AM) (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Besser by Doris Knecht, an Austrian writer. But as far as I'm aware of not translated into English. Great book, I will definitely read more by this author.

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Marzahn, mon amour: Geschichten einer Fußpflegerin by Katja Oskamp. Sometimes charming, but nothing to write home about.

message 29: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Thanks, I have read some books by him. And he is definitely in another league of writing.

message 30: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments 1000 Serpentinen Angst by Olivia Wenzel

Nothing world-shaking, but with interesting parts and the writing was good.

message 31: by Alwynne (new)

Alwynne I've been wanting to read the Wenzel, apparently there's an English translation coming out fairly soon, but sounds as if you weren't very keen?

message 32: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments A three star book for me is still a good one (I'm going with the star descriptions). And I found it interesting to read, also the writing style she has chosen, but the book didn't make an impression that is going to last and it kept me at a distance.

message 33: by Alwynne (new)

Alwynne Thanks, my three-stars is probably similar, okay but not memorable! I suppose from the reviews I was hoping for something more striking.

message 34: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Book number fifteen: Der fernste Ort by Daniel Kehlmann. Short novella. Very surreal. Surely not after everybody's taste.

message 35: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments It was actually book number fourteen.

message 36: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments I finished Die Gedichte Part 1 by Hermann Hesse. It is the first volume of a two volume edition. It was okay, but with a book that shows the complete work of a poet, you can't really expect it to be fabulous. Because in hindsight, you would probably decide, that not every poem written is worth being published. Hesse expresses his worries about that himself in the preface.

message 37: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Der Fall Franza ;Requiem für Fanny Goldmann by Ingeborg Bachmann. First book by her, unfortunately unfinished, but I will definitely read more by her.

message 38: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Auf eine Zigarette mit Helmut Schmidt by Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

message 39: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Ich nannte ihn Krawatte by Milena Michiko Flasar.

message 40: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Mutter. Chronik eines Abschieds jMelitta Breznik. It was okay, but I have read a lot similar to this before, nothing groundbreaking in here, neither the story nor the writing.

message 41: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments Der Parfümierte Tannenbaum by Hans Fallada. Sometimes a bit cosy, sometimes a bit outdated. And this edition was only made to make some extra cash, because it was just put together without any kind of attention.

message 42: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sophron) | 39 comments So I have read 21 books written in German this year. Not too bad.

Lizzy Siddal (Lizzy’s Literary Life) | 302 comments Well done! You made it to the Dufourspitze!
