ALEXANDRA SOTO-FLORES | 1 comments As Jeannette grows up, she stops seeing all the things her father used to do as great or even an adventure. As a child, she was the one that would support his big dreams, especially the Glass Castle. She comes to realize that that is what it will always be, just a beautiful idea and nothing more. I believe that is when she loses the innocence of a child and her faith toward her father and starts seeing how bad their situation really is and how her father is not doing anything to improve it. I think this is one of the saddest changes in the book. We always hear a "girl's hero is her father" and Jeannette was no exception., She looked up to him, as she grew older and he kept failing her, she even suggested leaving him. Her mother replies, "I can't believe you would say that," she said. 'I can't believe that you, of all people, would turn your father.' I was Dad's last defender" (188). Although she suggests this, she never blames her father or holds a grudge toward him. That is what a family should be about caring and loving someone with flaws and all. This book shows that not all families are perfect, and many have trials but they are still family. Jeannette leaves for New York but she loves her parents and tries to help them whenever she is able.
