In this section, Bennett quotes from the Didache, the Epistle to Diognetus and the Itinerarium of St. Clement among other works. How familiar are you with these other early Christian writings? Have you read any of them? If not, has Bennett’s reference to them made you want to read them?

Bennett’s use of and reference to these early Christian writings has me interested in reading them. They provide a first person view of what the Church was dealing with very early on.
Clement’s writings were interesting in that they stressed obedience and gave a clear picture of the hierarchy in the Church. He mentions this three or four times. Which shows there was an issue with obedience that needed to be addressed.
Justin Martyrs writing in the Apologia is clear, concise, and so well reasoned it is edifying to read.
I look forward to digging into Pope Benedict’s books on the Church Fathers.

I've heard of the Didache, but not the others. I definitely want to read them. Clement's letter shows an awareness of the Bishop of Rome's superior position to others that is quite interesting.

Mariangel | 726 comments The Appendix of the book has a very good collection of excerpts from Fathers (not just the 4 in the book) supporting several of the teachings of the Catholic Church which are contested by Protestants. One of them is the primacy of Peter and his successors. Very interesting reading them together.
