I am a Bibliotherapist practising in Devon and London. I am a passionate believer in the fact that prose and poetry have enormous healing qualities. I am called "Tales for Tea" and believe that what I do is the novel way (literally) to better mental health. I have a webpage http://www.talesfortea.co.uk. If you are interested in what I do, please take a look - I would value feedback. Keep reading! x

It must be very satisfying work.
Thanks Kathy. It really is magical to watch people succumb to the healing comfort of a story. The other advantage is that every story can mean a different thing to everyone so no session is the same. The new group I work with who have recently become partially sighted is particularly rewarding. Shared reading does not need to stop just because you are no longer a child. Most of my groups are adults and they really benefit from it.

Welcome Sharon - I had not heard of bibliotherapy before. Having said that, I work for Devon County Council and we have been working with the Reader Organisation, which runs 12 groups across Devon on a very similar basis - mainly working with people who have had strokes, have memory losss or a mental health problem. I have participated in such a group and seen the power of shared reading.

I have been practising Bibliotherapy for about ten years now and after some further training with the Reader Organisation I ran three groups for them in London and Ilfracombe. I am now an independent Bibliotherapist, keen to set up more groups in the area. After all, the more people who can benefit from the magic of the shared word, the better. It really is the novel way to better mental health!
