I started reading this yesterday and love his style. The poems which are intermingled with his reminiscences are lovely and I think it definitely enhances my understanding of the poems.
It's a very easy read. He describes the daily life and various characters that inhabit that world so well.
I'm really enjoying this. So much of van Wyk's world is familiar: cardboard suitcases, rolled-up calendars, grade 1 teachers.
He speaks in a child's voice with adult wit and reflection. Reminds me a bit of Herman Charles Bosman in that regard.
Loved the psalm 23 anecdote.

Chris van Wyk passed away in October. His output included poetry, novels, as well as non-fiction. He edited a version of Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom for children.
Here's his obituary from The Daily Maverick.
