Thanks... not the perfect setup but gives people a good idea what they can do when things go bad.
Still have one in my truck and at home... It's actually still pretty active in some areas and a great emergency preparedness tool!
I'm a retired veteran commander of Emergency Operations Centres including On-Site Disaster Command, and Urban Heavy Rescue ( courtesy of the USMC) and was deployable world wide. I just wanted to say that the article about on the off grid comms & continued benefit of having Ham Radio involved in a disaster mitigation is spot on ! Ham radio clubs train to be an effective measure at and during disasters, manmade or otherwise, and they are much easier to operate off of a smaller energy source. I've relied on Ham radio operators in the past when the current technology had failed miserably and give the Hams great full credit in helping to mitigate disasters.

Preppers, after getting at least a Tech license, should look into joining AMRRON. www.amrron.com, they are a group of Ham radio operators focusing on Preppers, Patriots, and like minded individuals. They are trying to set up a network across the US for emergency comms.

Nothing more. I can see if I can find a Ham Radio Club near you. If you contact them and express interest, they usually bend over backwards to help you study and clubs usually have the people who can administer the test.
As for learning about Ham? The ARRL has the best Technician License text book, it's available on Amazon. You can check out QRZ.com, set up a free account and use their practice quizzes and tests. There are Android and iTunes apps that have the entire test question pool. The test for Tech is only about 25-27 questions, but if you just want to memorize all the questions and answers, you can do that. I found this to be the best way for me. Once I got on the air, the hands on and having to use my books as references taught me a lot. ANY questions, I'd happy to help you with. I love seeing new hams get on the air.
