Shannon (theholyterror) | 132 comments I'll nominate Happy Hour of the Damned by Mark Henry anyway.
Happy Hour of the Damned (Amanda Feral, #1) by Mark Henry

Synopsis:

Seattle. One minute you're drinking a vanilla breve, the next, some creepy old dude is breathing on you, turning you into a zombie. And that's just for starters. Now, the recently deceased Amanda Feral is trying to make her way through Seattle's undead scene with style (mortuary-grade makeup, six-inch stilettos, Balenciaga handbag on sale) while satisfying her craving for human flesh (Don't judge. And no, not like chicken.) and decent vodkatinis.

Making her way through a dangerous world of cloud-doped bloodsuckers, reapers, horny and horned devils, werewolves, celebrities, and PR-obsessed shapeshifters--not to mention an extremely hot bartender named Ricardo--isn't easy. And the minute one of Amanda's undead friends disappears after texting the word, "help" (The undead--so dramatic!) she knows the afterlife is about to get really ugly.

Something sinister is at hand. Someone or something is hellbent on turning Seattle's undead underworld into a place of true terror. And this time, Amanda may meet a fate a lot worse than death...

Last month we nominated for Horror - it just happened to be a zombie book I guess. Oh well - lots of different types of zombies :)

message 6: by Mason (new)

Mason (rheacamren) I would like to nominate Lifehack by Joseph Picard.

He's fairly new so I don't think many people have read this book. I loved it. It's a little different then most zombie books. The zombies begin to advance in both strategy and technology. The characters made me laugh throughout the book with their constant arguing. It's pretty short at only 200 something pages, but it kept my attention.

I think it would be a nice change to read a zombie book that can make you laugh instead of one focussing on horror.

Hey Mason - the story looks good. I know that Barnes & Noble doesn't carry it, nor does my library system (which is pretty good). It's on Amazon - but is it available anywhere else?

message 8: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathry) Lifehack sounds excellent but like Shanon I was not able to find it anywhere except amazon and that's a paperback for $15.95.

message 9: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathry) I'm nominating As The World Dies The First Days A Zombie Trilogy. The series is now complete and one of my favorites. It is certainly horror but with many other elements that I think this group would appreciate, such as action and romance.

For those who are interested in an economical ebook version try this link, http://www.smashwords.com/books/searc...

Thanks for the link Kathryn! I've got As The World Dies on my list of books to read very soon.

message 11: by Mason (last edited Sep 17, 2009 02:44PM) (new)

Mason (rheacamren) Well I didn't realize it would be that hard to find. But, now that I think about it, it was published by a small company so you can only really find it in the area it's from. I won an e-book version in a contest. I want a paperback version eventually.

In case anyone is interested in the e-book version you can find it here:

Thanks for the link Mason! I think we'll leave it off the suggestion list for a group read but I'm definately interested in reading it. I'll get it (soon hopefully) and read it (shortly after hopefully). In the meantime feel free to start a discussion thread for it and see if anyone else is reading or has read it that would like to talk about it.

$5 for an ebook is actually a good deal! Thanks again for the link

message 13: by Mason (new)

Mason (rheacamren) Has anyone read The Zombie Survival Guide? I heard it's funny, but the author is being completely serious and thought out every situation if it really happened.

message 14: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathry) I read it and did not like it.

Allison (alimac) I liked World War Z a lot and was going to nominate it, but Kelli beat me to it. So, I second her nomination.

AHH! I can't believe I forgot to post which book won! (I'll blame my husband for surprising me with a vacation - see not my fault ;) )

Our winner is Happy Hour of the Damned by Mark Henry. We'll start discussions on 12/1.

Thanks Shannon for putting it on the bookshelves - I was just trying to figure out what I've been forgetting to do on here when I saw a new book on the shelves

Bleh, mega chick-lit....

message 21: by Shanon (new)

Shanon (boban) | 1166 comments Mod
That tends to happen in UF & PNR quite often ;)

We've got some books coming up that aren't overly chick-lit though... Gil's All Fright Diner discussions start on 11/15.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I mean I can handle some like I like the Sookie books, but I can tell just by the cover art and title that it REEEEEEEEEAAAAKKKKESSS of the perfume called chick-lit. Plus the cover art annoyed me, she is a zombie and she looks like she just got back froma runway show show!!!!

message 23: by Shanon (new)

Shanon (boban) | 1166 comments Mod
Sometimes a book reaking of perfume is just what I need. Sorry you're not into the book this time Levi, maybe next time. We'll be doing nominations for the next one soon. Be sure to nominate something that sounds less chicky to you k

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok, thanks Shanon. After reading your last post I think I kind of sounded bratty or something of the sort, so I just want to say I am just making fun of the book and it was not meantto be mean or something.

Shanon (boban) | 1166 comments Mod
Don't stress on it Levi! I was being snarky too ;)

I'm actually not usually into chick-lit books too much anymore - it'll be a good change of pace from what I've been reading. You should try it, might get some insight into the beast that is woman... well dead woman... okay, might not be very insightfull...

message 26: by Lily (new)

Lily (lilithesque) But Mark Henry is not a chick, so maybe the publisher chooses the cover, but the inside may not be too chick litty. Anyway this is one I have meant to read since they all raved about this guy and book on B&Ns paranormal thread. I rarely read what folks call chick lit, although I enjoy some of the paranormal romance. I lean harder to straight paranormal, fantasy, sci fi, and horror. If I remember the banter, this book is soposed to be pretty snarky too. Who know, I havent read it.

anyway, good choice I am looking forward to.

Lily

I haven't heard much about the book so I have no idea how "chicky" it is. I've got it waiting for me at the library and that's about all I know about it... That and Shannon recommended it so it has to be good cuz she's got excellent tastes in books!

Ha, thanks. I wasn't going to post anything in regards to Levi's comments because I figured they'd turn out snarky. But I'm glad someone pointed out that the author is indeed male. I'm sure the cover and the blurb about the book weren't picked by Henry - it's all about marketing. And even if it was picked by him, who cares? The insides are what matter.

I was reading the author's blog and from reading that I think his books are going to be pretty funny. He seems like a cool guy. I mean, just take a look at his goodreads bio:

MARK HENRY traded a career as a counselor to scar minds with his fiction. In stories clogged with sentient zombies, impotent sex demons, transsexual werewolves and ghostly goth girls, he irreverently processes traumatic issues brought on by premature exposure to horror movies, an unwholesome fetish for polyester and/or witnessing adult cocktail parties in the swingin' 70s. A developmental history further muddied by surviving earthquakes, typhoons, and two volcanic eruptions. He somehow continues to live and breathe in the oft maligned, yet not nearly as soggy as you’d think, Pacific Northwest, with his wife and four furry monsters that think they’re children and have a complete disregard for carpet.

Anyway ... I'm definitely looking forward to reading and discussing this book!

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I guess I'll check it out, maybe I can find a different cover at B&N, if not too bad. Thank goodness I don't need it until Dec., I have so many books to read before then and I don't have money at the moment. Thanks guys!
