Ellen | 3549 comments After the death of her mother and a divorce from a man she still loved, Cheryl made the impulsive decision to hike the Pacific Coast Trail for more than a thousand miles. This was not something that she had aspired to do, had trained for or was remotely physically ready to attempt. She felt her life spiraling out of control with grief and an addiction to heroin so the PCT seemed like a great place to get herself back in check. For over 3 months she hiked by herself occasionally meeting up with others who would accompany her for short stretches. The time alone for reflection healed her emotionally and her pride at her accomplishment was well-deserved.

I know there are two camps (no pun intended) of opinion on this book. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Some of it was funny and at times it was sad as she dealt with her depression. She is definitely a much braver woman that I ever was; I cannot imagine being alone in a nylon tent night after night with wild animals about and a few human animals that I wouldn't want to run into either. I had a really hard time with the story about her mother's horse Lady. If you are at all sensitive to animal suffering, be forewarned and skip ahead in the book or the audio. That was heartbreaking.
