Though Mena is first terrified of Liam, she stands her ground with him. Where did that come from?

If she could survive that asylum, she could stand up for herself and to him.

I thought if she could have survived her husband she could handle Liam. She’d learned to judge and manage moods but, more importantly, she’d always kept her voice, no matter the circumstances. Yes, it got her institutionalized but at her core, she stood for what she believed to be her truths. Not a woman to back down.

Mena was terrified of Liam in part due to his reputation and in part due to his fierce countenance. He certainly didn't make a good first impression. She needed the safe refuge Liam could provide, but she was not going to keep quiet about Liam's treatment of his family.

I agree with all of you. She had suffered so much and yet she stood up for herself with a man she was afraid of.

She had an inner strength that enabled her to stand up to anyone she viewed as an oppressor, and Liam certainly fit the bill when he was in a temper.

She said something in the beginning that resonated with me about her being a terrible judge of character and trusting men who were unworthy - her husband and the doctor, who seemed kindly at first.
Thus, it could have been her distrust and fear of Liam that spurred her on to stand up for herself knowing innately that he wouldn't hurt her.

I'm not sure if that makes sense to anyone else but me, lol!
