I thought there was a slim possibility that he had somehow survived the shipwreck. The fact that he came home for revenge made sense to me while I was reading. It would be him or someone from England who found out where she was.
That Hamish survived the explosion, recovered from very serious injuries, made it back to Scotland and managed to remain hidden kinda stretched the limits of believable. I suspected there were secret passages and rooms. I didn't know who it was, but I knew it was someone.
After the first few references to the "figure", and the description of what happened to Hamish, I knew it was him. It was just a feeling, I guess, but it became clear to me that it was someone who was severely disfigured and then it clicked into place with talk of the horrific explosion.
I didn't think he could have survived the shipwreck so it didn't occur to me that it was him. I was thinking that it was someone from England, working for her husband, who had found out she was there.
