I Forgot the Name of That ___! discussion

This is a book I read in or around 2008-2010, no idea when it came out. Moderately Sci-fi in nature. A researcher does brain scans (a new fictional in depth brain profile) to living individuals and then again (I think) to them after they’ve died. I believe he had a loss of a wife or girlfriend to suicide which fuels his passion. He finds a young person with the same brain profile as a older person he scanned before they died, leading to possible evidence of reincarnation.
