Meh. The last third is interminable. I was mildly enjoying it up until that point. Thus book is nothing but a marriage plot, and no one is so interesting that that is enough. Even modern regency romances have something to spice them up. (And I am not talking about the sex.) This book has great ratings and I just don’t see it. I guess I am in the minority on this. If you are on the fence and can get it from the library, you might enjoy it more than I.
Adelaide,I've been fooled into reading some books with 4 and 5 star reviews on Goodreads, and wondered if I read the same book as those reviewers did. I usually look at the 2 and 3 star reviews before trying a book. If those reviews are specific in what they did not like, it makes me take a closer look at that book and browse it at my library first. However, some books I can only get via interlibrary loan, so I can't browse those. Sometimes I send the book back the same day I get it, which is a bit of a waste.
I am glad I tried a Georgette Heyer book, because she did write tons of books and seems to be popular. However, her writing style is just not for me. Perhaps her readers are more historical fiction fans than Regencgy Romance fans?
I'm glad I tried a Georgette Heyer book, as she looms large in Regency romance. That said, the comedy of manners, excessively flowery speech and sloooow plot are not for me. I found myself longing for a good old Gothic romance house fire to spice things up.Even the humor (the Baluchistan hound) got bogged down in the lengthy speechifying. And while the language must be true to the time period, without a dictionary I found myself lost and guessing what their expressions meant. What is a top-goose anyway?
I thought that whole part with Felix and the balloon should have been cut. ENDLESS. But, I am glad I read it. Maybe I will like one of her other genres better. Maybe.
Yeah - what was with that whole balloon sequence? It was like her editor said “needs another 50 pages - make something up.”
For those who do read alot of Regency Romance books: have you read anything by Barbara Cartland? She was pretty famous back in the day. Is she worth reading?
We should probably read a Barbara Cartland anyway. I’ll do some research and put it on the list.
