Since the topic is obviously skew to Sci-fi, I think we can give extra credit if the book is not a sci-fi.

Robert (rahenley) | 85 comments SFnal works:
A Rose for Ecclesiastes -- The eponymous novella is available free in audio and text from the Escape Pod podcast: http://escapepod.org/2014/02/28/ep437... -- it's profoundly moving.
The Martian Chronicles -- It's Bradbury, so not exactly sf, much more atmospheric.
The Martian -- the obvious recent pick
Stranger in a Strange Land -- on the effects of being raised by Martians...

Non-sf -- I confess to mostly being at a loss here:
A Princess of Mars -- a "planetary romance" and so seriously dated that I can't recommend it.

If you read A Princess of Mars (or ever have), you need to follow it with Maureen Birnbaum, Barbarian Swordsperson: The Complete Stories. The eponymous first story in this collection parodies A Princess of Mars so unmercifully that it's a must read. I wish it were a Kindle Single or something, so I could recommend it alone. But if you like parodies, this collection is worth reading; it's just mostly not Mars-focused.

I wonder if there isn't something non-sf featuring the Greek god Ares (aka "Mars") that would do, but can't think of anything (beyond the recent Wonder Woman movie) offhand.

Enjoy!

Robert (rahenley) | 85 comments Then there's Desolation Road -- the little I've read is well-written weirdness, kind of Martian steam-punk, sort of.

This reminds me, that Circe https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
did have some vivid depiction about Ares, though he is not the main character of that book, introduced mainly as the rival with Athena

Robert (rahenley) | 85 comments How could I have missed this list: 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books set on or about Mars? A lot of good ones there -- and many not so good...

For myself, I'm going on Dan Simmon's Ilium sometime soon.

So I jump-started with the Martian. Reminded me of a short story I read a long time ago in school and it was translated into Chinese, I don't even remember the author, but the astronaut's survival story is pretty interesting. So this girl was stuck on a planet with gravity less than earth and he needed to race against sunset to avoid being frozen to death. Does anyone know what the story is?

This the first time that I didn't finish a club book.
Got about 50% then WFH totally screws up my schedule.
Enjoyed it, I think the monologue format really suits audiobooks. The author did amazing plot twists with one hand tied back and tucked in a broken space suit.
