I'd never begrudge an author the income, except when it comes to novellas or 'short stories'. They always feel like afterthoughts (something they didn't think of in time while writing the latest in a series) or a rush to meet a holiday deadline (Christmas novellas... UGH!) Some authors seem to use them as 'teasers' or prequels, but usually they end up using them as the free sample or as a lead into a series. In maybe a hundred novellas, I'm lucky to come across one that is actually worth the price (Currently, "The Nameless Village" by Muhn Sihn tracing at around 80 pages is SO worth the $5!). But then, I've read great authors who have the gravitas to pull off a short story. The overwhelming majority do NOT. Most authors today forget the art (message) in lieu of the deadline and dollar. I will not buy a novella unless a.) the author is exceptional or b.) the price is commesurate with what I feel the content potentially is worth. Authors go on my 'banned' list if they keep up with 80 pages for $8 or the new trend 25 pages for $0.99. As for paperbacks? Nope. Sorry, NEVER pay for those unless we're talking foreign language. When I settle in with a book, more often than not, I want the full course meal; not the appetizer or the dessert.
