We get to see how some of the different factions will align if it comes to war and some individuals begin to place their loyalty with others. We also get our first glimpse of Denul magic at work and the meaning of the world which was interesting. Seems like the shake language has some power to it or is used to describe things of power.
"The woman glanced back. 'Shall I raise us an army?'
'What?'
T'riss gestured. 'Clay and rock, the dead roots beneath. Armed with slivers of stone. Below the deep clays there are bones, as well, and the husks of enourmous insects all wonderfully hued.' "
So T'riss has some serious power which could be handy in a fight. (view spoiler)
Also they are aware of Eleint and Soletaken at this point but they are more myth than reality.
I'm not entirely sure the point of most of this chapter. The T'riss stuff was interesting. As is the mystery around the Vitr.It destroys and eats through things. So it can be used...
This chapter was pretty confusing to me. I guess its because of the Vitr stuff.
What is your T'riss spoiler spoiling Bill?

I guess what this chapter is doing is letting us all know, that the Vitr sea has been around a while, it is destructive and unknown. As far as the Tiste are concerned, nothing comes out of it, survives it or gets washed up by it. Until now.
Yeah so Denul in its infancy eh? Bit of healing magic.

My theory on Korya. been looking through all the malazan books for this bit. Spoiler for MBofF a little bit (view spoiler)
Nice theory. I've been looking at all the characters names I don't recognize and trying to think if they could be someone else or the name might be twisted to something recognizable.
Stupid Q.. In page 191: does anyone agree with Steven about the nature of civilization? Is he somehow subtly reffering to something in the real world ?
I'm too lazy to look it up, but my guess is that yes he's referring to real world things. He's seemed to have done that in past books anyways.
Civilizations in decline are notable when certain of their members escape justice and do so with impunity.Who knows if he is referring to anything specific but there are numerous events in the not too distant past that you could point to and could make a case.

So who did? If footsteps were there to that place where she met that guard.
Johny wrote: "So who did? If footsteps were there to that place where she met that guard."T'riss and the Eleint emerged from the Vitr (at the same time/place) and then fought against each other. T'riss won by slicing open the Eleint's belly and slashing its entrails. Then she disgarded her ruined clothes, damaged armour and sword and walked away.
Actually, I was under the impression that T'riss cut her way out from the belly of the Eleint as well. It says in the description of the creature that it has many wounds "as of ribs punching out through the thick, scaled hide, but she could see no thrust of white bone from any of them". That indicates to me that the wounds were made from the inside.
But...1) I'm pretty sure they would've talked about this then (during the ride). Instead all the dialogue and even the meaning of her name (= from the Vitr/born of the sea) indicate that she did the same thing as in
2) Blood and Bone.
__________
‘No. The Vitr does not create, it destroys.’
‘Yet you came from it.’
‘I was not welcome there.’
This was new. ‘Are you certain of that?’
T’riss was still for a moment, and then she nodded. ‘It assailed me. Age upon age, I fought. There was no thought but the struggle itself, and this struggle, I think, consumed all that I once was.’
Maybe she used her sorcery to penetrate the Eleint's armour/scales first. Then attacked the flesh and entrails with her sword. vOv
