Nan Mykel | 2 comments Nan Mykel, a psychologist and survivor of incest, treated sex offenders in a prison setting for over twelve years, until her retirement. She reports that the experience was a challenge both professionally and personally.

Realizing that most incest offenders go unreported and therefore untreated, and furthermore that the great majority of them do not believe incest is harmful, she decided to set the record straight. In FALLOUT she comes out of the closet at 79 years of age, and reveals the impact of incest in her life.

She reviews the literature on incest and compares findings with her own experience. Because offenders do not readily see emotional or psychological damage resulting from incest, she allows them into her inner world via selections from her chronological journal including dreams, reflections and drawings over the years. Included are several preserved letters from her father, the perpetrator.

She offers herself up as evidence that although a survivor may appear untouched by the incest, the reality is far different. Mykel has a great deal to say to other survivors and the community. The 438-page book has been available for one day, on Amazon. Therefore, there are no reviews or feedback on the book yet.

On the day after publication, she was uncertain about how the book would be received, fearing that her journal entries were too personal.

Nan Mykel | 2 comments FINAL PAGE

I retired from treating incarcerated sex offenders in 1999 and soon after began the first of what was to become the third and final draft of my book. Writing it was an ongoing process, up to and including the last page, added during the proofing phase.

Earlier drafts were limited to only my experience as an incest survivor. Then I realized how easy it would be for offenders to discount what I wrote. Thus began my great submergence into the professional literature on the topic. It was during the third draft that I added "The Role of the Mother" and a chapter on "Shame."

Just as I got depressed when I earned my Ph.D., I am still recovering from a depression following the publication of the book earlier this month. I wonder if anyone else has had that response to "their dream coming true."
