This is the thread for discussion for the classic book of the month. Let

Things to consider:

1. Were you hooked immediately by the book or did it take a while to get into?
2. Did you like the plot?
3. Did the characters drive the plot or were they just passengers?
4. Did it come across as a credible story?
5. Did you connect to any of the characters in the story
6. Did you like the ending?
7. Did you have any quote or lines that stood out for you?
8. Would you read any other titles by this author?

Karen O I’m excited to be reading this! (Getting a bit of a late start, I know.)

Mike VanHoose I finished this book a few days ago. Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. East of Eden is, at least to me, one of the greatest American novels ever. The story is so easy to pick up, from the biblical connotations, the struggle between brothers for acceptance, a fathers live for one son over the other. The Trask family is so tragically twisted, Cal and his mother are just alike, same with Adam and Aron. This is easily one of my top 3 favorite books of all time.

Karen O I’m currently listening to the audiobook, beautifully narrated by Richard Poe. I’m really enjoying this book, so much so that I’m finding endless reasons to go out for another walk.

Debbie (debbiegregory) | 585 comments I'm so disappointed, I've tried so hard to get into this but just not interested. the writing is beautiful, and the nature descriptions are very atmospheric. I'm just not gelling with any of the characters. I think it might be my frame of mind atm. Going to give it up for now but I will return and try again.

Karen O I know February is over, but I'm still reading this book, and still enjoying it tremendously. The writing is just beautiful, the story very engrossing, and the characters very compelling (even if not always entirely believable). I'm so glad to be reading it! I've read other books by Steinbeck and enjoyed them, although not nearly as much as I'm enjoying this one -- with the exception of The Grapes of Wrath, which I read in high school and really loved. (I was definitely in the minority in that opinion. I believe most of the other kids though it was boring and way, way too long and tedious.) I'm also wondering about the movie adaptation with James Dean. It's such a big book, I'm not sure how it can be squeezed into a movie, but I'm curious to find out.

Rebecca | 161 comments I'm still reading it too, in fact I only started it the other day. I'm planning to read it slowly over the month. It's going OK so far.

Rebecca | 161 comments Unfortunately, although I didn't dislike it, I found it quite slow and a bit of a slog to get through.
