Sam Hartburn | 14 comments Wow! I've only read the introduction so far, but this book is not what I expected at all. I'd somehow got the impression that it was a bit dry and stuffy. I'm sure that there will be more serious parts as it progresses, but the introduction is delightful and funny and made me go 'oooh' more than once. I'm excited about reading the rest of it.

I read that book a loooong time ago (I might have been 12 or so), and a lot of it went over my head. I remember being really hooked in the beginning and losing interest towards the end. If I remember correctly, there are lighter chapters interspersed with drier chapters, and towards the end I definitely skimmed through the heavier chapters.
Someone else I follow on Twitter was talking about reading it, and I'm thinking I should pick it up again. I have such an impressionistic memory of it, it would be interesting to see what stuck and how I react to it now.

Sam Hartburn | 14 comments I wouldn't have got through it at 12! I'm about a quarter of the way through now, and there are definitely some heavier parts, but the overall tone is still light and fun. I love the dialogues. It's taking a long time though, as I usually read in bed and it's definitely not a bedtime read!

This is one of my problems with some of the prompts, too. I don't think my tired brain is going to be able to slog through a 1977 knot theory text at bedtime!
