I thought I'd open up a space to just start general discussions about the first group of chapters for Eye of the World. What's everyone thoughts so far?

I will say that for me, I always forget just how long it takes them to leave Emond's Field. Not that I'm annoyed by that or anything, I just always forget quite how much set dressing goes into it before the Trollocs come in and even afterward.

I've also been very interested in the relationship between Moiraine and Egwene in these beginning chapters. Both are two of my favorite characters in the entire series, but I feel I'm a lot more intrigued by their interactions (or what we see of them) this time around.

Brygmi Jane | 2 comments This is my first time reading WoT and I have to say that at the beginning I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue. I wasn't enjoying the style very much (so slow! so many descriptions!) and Rand isn't the most fun character - hopefully he will become much more complex later. But it was getting better how the story progressed and now I'm curious and invested (I'm at chapter 17).

I like Egwene the most. Fun fact: Egwene is named Egwain in the Czech translation and I don't get why. All the other characters have their original names (at least so far) and this is like such a little change that I really don‘t know why bother with changing it at all? Moiraine is also my favorite and I'm excited to learn more about her.

Yeah, the pace is definitely suuuuper slow at the beginning, but things pick up. And, well, its a 14 book series so there's character development for everyone involved.

The change from Egwene to Egwain is probably a pronunciation thing because Egwain is actually how the name is pronounced (during my first read of the series I definitely called her "Eg-win" for like three books before I looked at the pronunciations). Its still interesting that they changed it, though. I wonder if they did it for other languages and other names where the pronunciation isn't obvious (there's a lot of names like that).
