I just got to the part I actually remembered (in Chapter 14), and it's still chilling, I have to admit! One thing that I've noticed about Kaye's mysteries is how ... resilient everyone is. One minute they're panicked over death, and the next minute they're off blithely down the garden path. I'm not sure if this is normal human nature, but it does strike me as odd!
Im starting to notice a tendency in Kaye heroines to find the most inadvisable course of action -& follow it!
Miranda seems to be lacking in common sense. I know that if I were to be the only adult in a strange house, after dark, all the lights would be on and I'd have some music on. And I wouldn't be taking any after supper strolls in the garden, either!

Shoot, I would have, even if the occasional murder hadn't been happening in my vicinity!
Karlyne--So of course our clever author has Miranda voicing those very same thoughts the next morning!
Oh, Wally--child detective! I did have to look up the 'Dick Barton' ref. No one is taking him seriously--so, given the conventions of the genre, the canny reader should pay attention.

Too right! M.M. Kaye really knows how to dial up the fear factor but too many avoidable brushes with death are a bit of a credibility problem.

I loved this! I was struck by how many people want to wallop him--a bit free with the rod they were in those days :/
