Algernon | 78 comments Southern Gods is the first title that came to mind, probably because I'm a big fan of countryblues music.

Robert McCammon is very, very good at dark subjects. Boy's Life is my favorite, but Gone South is probably closer to what you are searching for.

Finally, anything by Daniel Woodrell should be good, but without the supernatural elements. Well, maybe except The Maid's Version which has something to do with ghosts.

Oh, yeah, I liked that one, too. And it is inspired by a book by Arthur Machen, who fits in with the Old Weird Horror that Rockabilly mentioned liking.

I also just read a short story that might qualify, "The Harvestbuck" by Steve Berman. It is in the volume Red Caps, but I haven't read any other stories yet.
