Ayacchi | 1732 comments ★ MAY READING PLAN ★

I read less in March and had a quite hard time to read in the second half of April. I found that next month's (May) group read is not my cup of tea and I don't have any idea about the challenge. But then I remember Emile Zola and have some books of his so maybe I'll read it (or not, since it's a long passage). And for the group read, I might skip this time, except I suddenly want to read The Fellowship of the Ring or Howl's Moving Castle (both are my -God-knows-how-long- TBR), tho I'm not sure if Howl will fit the theme.

And the other reason is, I want to focus on my on-hold list, some of them even read in a year or two years ago. This, also I'm not so sure since some of them are nonfiction and I don't know if I'm in the mood to read the rest. Also, I suddenly feel like reading something in my native language, but still not sure which one to read. I'll add the list when the mood finally comes.

※ ON-HOLD ※

📱 Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine ✅ 🍁

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Too funny, I have had Howl's Moving Castle on my TBR list forever too. I even own a copy! I am not sure if it will fit the fantasy theme for the group read, but it may. I think it is an alternate reality of the UK, based on themes from WWII, but not absolutely sure. Wales is listed as one of the settings, and that is definitely UK, Earth. I think they want a completely imaginary world like Pern, or Discworld or the land of Elfhame in The Cruel Prince. You should ask for a ruling though. I bit the bullet and bought The Cruel Prince - only because I was purchasing another book with it.

message 29: by Ayacchi (new)

Ayacchi | 1732 comments I doubt it too. The anime adaptation also looks Earthy. I have some other books in mind, like The Girl Who Drank the Moon and Lord of the Ring (since The Hobbit is nominated). I'm going to ask once the thread is made, if I decided to join the group read

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The Girl Who Drank the Moon might make it. It was a great story!

Ayacchi | 1732 comments ★ MAY READ ★

I don't know if it's only me or some people out there also feel the same, but I'm not in the mood to read right now. I thought with the quarantine due to covid-19, I'd be able to gobble lotsa books. But eventho I have many books in hand I can choose, I'm kind of losing interest in reading. Is it the atmosphere or am I just lazy? I don't know, but here the short list of what I've read (I'm still trying to finish at least 2 more books)

Janice (jamasc) | 60289 comments You are not alone, Aya. Lots of people are having trouble focusing on reading right now. I don't have trouble reading books, but I'm really struggling with work. I can't seem to focus at all and can get distracted so easily. Ack!

message 33: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments It is not just you, Aya. I am listening, but my eyes cannot seem to want to engage and read the text books I have stacked up to finish. I have been re-listening to some series books, actually.
I have not been sleeping well and I find that it helps me listen to the familiar voices and I already know the story, so it does not matter if I fall asleep for a while.

message 34: by Ayacchi (new)

Ayacchi | 1732 comments It's nice to know that I'm not the only one. Procrastinating to the max 😂 Work was as hard as reading, felt like my brain would explode. I started to wonder if my brain is hibernating, lol.

Nice idea Cherie. Seems like audiobook will save us from this situation. Tho in my case I still have to read the text 😂

message 35: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finally realized that I needed to stop stressing out over the books that I have not finished, Aya. I found that I needed to re-listen to stories that I already know because the voices soothed me.

For you, you might consider an old favorite book and re-read it to give yourself some relief from working so hard on a new story. Or take up a new book (or old) in a series where you are familiar with the characters. Series characters can become like family members over time and there is no social distancing from them. Hug them to you! ❤️

message 36: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I found this same thing out Cherie. I found a copy of Alice in Wonderland on my husbands shelf. I felt such comfort reading this old friend.

I sometimes feel I need to finish every book. I must read what my book club is reading. I now realized sometimes one needs to just be like Alice. Sometimes you just need to head down a rabbit hole

message 37: by Ayacchi (new)

Ayacchi | 1732 comments I feel you, Renee. I won't be able to enjoy the book if I force myself to read it. Maybe next time I'll ask myself, do I really want to read this one? to make it sure. I feel guilty too if I don't finish a book. I still remember one book I didn't finish 2 years ago yet put it on the reading challenge. Feels like cheating 😂 So if I've already read half of the book, I'll try to finish it no matter how long it'll take. If I stop because I don't like it, I'll put it down. Maybe years later I'd like to read it again. Or just forget it.

Thanks for the idea, Cherie! Really appreciate it. Since we won't do summer challenge this year (apparently), I think I'll read something light from my childhood, like Enid Blyton and R. L. Stine. Or maybe continue Anne of Green Gables series. Maybe some free spirit folks will help me regain my interest in reading 💪

message 38: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited May 27, 2020 03:47AM) (new)

Jayme | 4630 comments You all are doing it right. I was talking to a friend last week who is a psychologist about what we all seem to be feeling about reading and she told me to back off of the challenges - not to stop them, but to stop approaching each book I look at to read as "Will it fit a challenge slot" that adds stress and ask myself instead if it "will bring me joy, relaxation, or insight right now?" If doesn't, don't read - put it aside for the time being.
She also said that whether we realize it or not we are all under so much more stress than normal that things we love may appear to become stressful as our brains process what is going on in our world and needs time to slow down and take it in.
I know for me I have slowed down on how many books I read a week/month because I can't seem to focus 100%. I've gone form 17 to 10 and actually think it will be lower this month. And that is OK.

message 39: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60289 comments I am almost reliant on the challenges to help me figure out what I want to read next. I do need to ask myself those same questions though. The book I'm currently reading for the challenge is a bit of a challenge. The first part was a scientific info-dump and I was falling asleep within pages. It's getting a bit more interesting and I'm starting to care about a couple of the characters so I think I'll continue.

We have to give ourselves permission to do the things we want.

message 40: by Ayacchi (new)

Ayacchi | 1732 comments Your words enlighten me Jayme! Reading and enjoy reading isn't same and I don't wanna repeat the same mistake I did 3 years ago. So I may do as you suggested 💪

As for the challenges, I think of it as a door I need to open to see what's behind it. It's widening my view, let me see things I've never known before. And it helps me reduce my TBR pile, hehe. I'll learn more from you guys in gophering books, so I'll meet the criterion that suits me best :)

message 41: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments i don't do the challenges here. I prefer a more easy going approach to what I read. I like to look at what i have and decide to read it.

I do read most of the discussion books. I like discussing the books. I really does enhance the reading experience for me.

I will sometimes do the monthly book challenge. Its one book. The yearly is just too many for me

message 42: by Ayacchi (new)

Ayacchi | 1732 comments I'm not ready with the yearly challenge, not really good with clues and gophering. But maybe I'll join it later.

I like the discussion as well, tho I didn't participate for 2 months. It's always nice to know what others think about the book, get the questions answer, and it helps me to see things from different kind of views

Ayacchi | 1732 comments June was crazy!! I don't think I ever read that many books in a month (I don't know about 3-4 years ago, might check later)! As usual, I couldn't reach my goal so for July, mostly I'll read my TBR from months before (if I still have the energy, lol).

June was also my very first Toppler (I didn't dare to join it before with those tasks I didn't understand at all). I thought we would only get till Hand 4 but we did it pretty good! My bad, I can be ambitious sometime, the feeling to not lose (not to win) was quite strong at the midweek, and I ate more than I could digest. Had headache these few days, looking at the screen too long. At the end of the day, I made peace with myself, that everyone were doing their best and the most important thing is we were having fun. I enjoyed it, and I learned so many things from the books I read and I think it's more than enough for me. Result is only a bonus, progress is everythiiinnngg (well, almost).

Now that I think about it, I might be more dumb than Eeyore, lol. Talking about enjoying reading than stressing it out in May. Bad Aya didn't learn her lesson well. But the good thing is, I quite enjoy reading those books, for most of them are my TBR and are great.

Janice (jamasc) | 60289 comments The team topplers can be a bit competitive. I tend to compete more with myself - can I set my own personal record in the number of books I read? The thing to remember is that it's all about having fun, getting to know your teammates better, and the satisfaction of knocking a few books off your tbr.

The next tbr in two months is a 24 hour one with no teams. I hope you'll join in again.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I had fun but i don't think I will do it again. It was too structured for me. I have not really decided.

The next one is a 24 hour. There will be no teams so the structured component won't be there. There will be a theme and tasks for which you need to find a book. Much less pressure. Give it a try and see if it fits you better.

Yeah, I found some great readers and how they spared time to read, and that's awesome.

Read-a-thon isn't my thing actually, and I'm a slow reader so usually I can't finish a book in a day. But I'll try to join when the task fits me!

I felt some pressure too, but mostly it was me who pressed my ownself 😂 I didn't undertand the tasks and where to start so I didn't dare to join before. But I'm starting to get it now and maybe we'll find some easy tasks that fit us better later, which we can join
