Another breath of fresh air in fantasy!

The story is a updated take on African lore. It imagines the pregnant women on slave ships who were thrown overboard delivered their children in The Deep. These children adapt and become the wajinru, similar to mer-people.

Among the wajinru, one is chosen to be the Historian. The Historian carries all the memories of the past. The weight of the memories this one wajinru must carry can be debilitating. The current Historian longs for her own mind and fears she will die if the burden is not lifted.

The gist I get from the other reviews on GR's, is you will either love this book or hate it. I am on the love side. The writing is poetic and beautiful.
An added bonus is the afterword on how the story came to life.
