Well, I did not think to put this into the Survival Tag-but I think I will move mine!I am glad you liked it too Cora. I agree, it was a breath of fresh air in the Fantasy genre, and I would love to see more of this type of world too.

I thought about whether I should put it in survival for a while. Someone did tag it that way and I thought that a major theme was how does a people survive given such tragic history.

The Deep is based on music by Daveed Diggs, William Hutson, and Jonathan Snipes. It is based on the concept that when slavers threw pregnant African women overboard from slave ships the ocean helped the unborn babies to survive by transforming them into underwater creatures (which resembled merfolk). Overtimes the descendants of these creatures have created their own civilization under the sea. A major theme of this novella is dealing with collective history, especially when that history is violent and upsetting, versus looking to the future to survive. I appreciated the struggle that the main character is going through and the struggle to find a way to survive - whether that means forgetting the past is necessary. I always like it when something I read both entertains and makes me think about the world. This novella was different than anything else I have read in the genre and I hope that this world is visited again, by either Solomon or others inspired by the original music.
