Kati (katikatnik) | 11 comments I'm looking for scifi/fantasy books featuring brothers - but fighting on the same side, not against each other, books where the fact that they are brothers means something, where they have some deeper bond, where it's not just a random thing that the book could do just as well without. Examples?

Fantasy: Jane S. Fancher's "Dance of the Rings" trilogy

Scifi: Wen Spencer's "Endless Blue" or the "Ukiah Oregon" series

Any recommendations?

Greyweather Pandemonium by Daryl Gregory

The Shadow Year by Jeffrey Ford

Also, Roger Zelazny's Amber series features brothers on both sides of the struggles.

Chris Haught (haughtc) Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman starts the Dragonlance Chronicles. It has a large group of characters, including a pair of twins.

I'm currently reading The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, which also has a set of twin brothers. They're more supporting cast than main characters though.

Paul Weimer (paulweimer) Lois Bujold's novels of Miles Vorkosigan has some interesting interactions between Miles and his clone-brother Mark.

Mirror Dance is the most prominent of these.

Werner Raymond Feist's Riftwar Saga series features a group of brothers (sons of a king), who are important characters (and take family ties seriously), and who all fight on the same side.

T | 2 comments One of the best brother series out there in sci fi is by Rob Thurman. It's called the "Cal Leandros" series. The first one is Nightlife. There are 6 with a 7th on the way in March. She also has another series with brothers. The 1st book is called Chimera.

I'd second Werners recommendation. The whole of the Riftwar Cycle (by Raymond E. Feist) as it's sometimes called is a series of 28 (29 in the US becuase they split the 1st novel into 2 parts) featuring one kingdom ruled by one family over a century or so. There are lots of supporting characters who are also really important and in a few of the parts (the whole cycle is split into trilogies and quadrilogies which can be read on their own) the theme of brothers is really strong.

In particular, the initial trilogy has two boys (one an orphan) raised as brothers who both rise from humble beginnings to become beings of tremendous power;

Magician
Silverthorn
A Darkness at Sethanon

But in particular two books are centred on two princes of the Kingdom who have two books dedicated to them and their adventures. These have an interesting element in that one is destined to become King and inherit the throne and the other will have to be supportive and take a lesser path. They are separtely known as the Krondors Sons #1 & 2 books;

Prince of the Blood
The King's Buccaneer

Also if i remember correctly, some of the later books have a couple of half brothers, one true elf and one who is half human/ half elf to further complicate matters.
