Karen (kaydeanne) Hi, I'm Karen. My first introduction to Terry Pratchet was Mort via audio book. In fact most of my first reads of Pratchett were audio books. It was a great way to pass the time whilst doing the dull work of ironing and he quickly became one of my favourite authors. I've read/listened to a fair number of his non-discworld books as well.

I love the idea of doing a monthly read since I don't think I could ever get tired of re-reading anything he wrote.

Other authors/genres I love are too mixed and unrelated to list. I just love to read a big variety of different books.

Mark | 5 comments I have been ahuge fan since colour of magic since it came out. Have read nearly 100% of his books.

I am a big reader of books.

Catherine McClelland (rugbydeprofundis) | 2 comments Hi my name is Cathy. I was introduced to Terry Pratchett's books a few years ago. I love the way his books reflect our world in a very humorous manner. And having worked in academia I find the faculty of Unseen University spot on to academic faculty everywhere.

message 4: by Kaya (new)

Kaya Fletcher Hi my name is Kaya,
I have listened to some non-discworld Terry Pratchett audiobooks, and I've seen some of the animated versions of Terry Pratchett's books. I greatly enjoyed those so I'm interested in reading the discworld books.

I also enjoy Stephen King and Agatha Christie novels.

Glenno (glenno54) | 13 comments Hi my name is Glenn......
.........and have been an devoted reader of all Terry Pratchett books for many years now. One time I even summoned up the courage to patiently glue together his Cut Out Book of UU. Currently I am 2 quarters of the way through "Raising Steam" which is turning out to be my most favourite Christmas present.
The idea of a monthly read is a challenge I would enjoy because, after finishing Raising Steam, I was planning on going back to reread from the start of the Discworld series - I've forgotten the story of Colour of Magic - an incredible 40 books and 30 odd years ago.
Can't get enough of Sir Terry's wit, humour and distinctive satire.

Wabisabigio | 2 comments Hello, I'm Gio and I'm relatively new to the Pratchett world, having read only a few of his books, but I am trying to make that up.
My favourite so far has to be 'Mort', which I read in Italian and enjoyed it anyway. (If it still manages to be funny in translation, what must it be in original??)

message 7: by Madeline (new)

Madeline Barton | 3 comments Hi, I'm Madeline. I've been a Pratchett fab for some time now and have read the Discworld series at least four times over and I never seem to get bored!
It was my brother who read them and got me into them. His favourites were always the guards and mine the witches. I think Maskerade is my favourite, I love it that Agnes is so calm and level-headed when all the other characters at the opera are so over-dramatic!
I would say that my taste in books is quite eclectic - from George Orwell to Winston Graham to autobiographies and I'm currently reading the Game of Thrones series.

message 8: by Mordechai (new)

Mordechai Housman | 75 comments Hi, I'm Mordechai. I have been an avid fan of Terry Pratchett's work since "The Colour of Magic" came out, and I have tried to read everything of his I could get my hands on (including his non-Discworld books).
I am also new to Goodreads (I joined around January 1st), and I hope people here will be kind and show me the ropes.
I just took out Mort from the library to reread for this group's monthly read. I used to own almost all of his books, but at one point I couldn't keep a lot of things and unfortunately I had to give away many of my books. But here I am, to join in discussion about this book, as soon as I find out where to do that.

message 9: by Celise (new)

Celise (celise_) | 30 comments Hi everyone, I'm Celise. I wouldn't consider myself a fan quite yet, as I'm only just reading my second Pratchett book, The Light Fantastic, but I want to go along with all of the group monthly reads!

message 10: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 4 comments Hi, I'm Chris. I just discovered that this group was out there when I saw that Celise joined. (Hi Celise!)

Last year I started at the beginning of Discworld, hoping to knock out a book a month until I finished the series.

I got as far as finishing #4. I've been working on Sourcery lately. Maybe this group will help push me to getting on with it.

message 11: by Celise (new)

Celise (celise_) | 30 comments (Hi Chris!) Yeah I thought joining a group would be good motivation to read the 40+ Discworld novels. I also have Good Omens on my shelf so I hope to try that soon.

I look forward to discuss and get good recommendations!

Welcome,, Jose! (Sorry I don't know how to do that accent mark over the "e.") i would recommend anything TP has written, but why don't you just join us in the monthly reads? We even discuss the books sometimes. It's a lot of fun.

message 16: by José (new)

José (lectorconstante19) Thank you Mordechai! (don't worry about de accent :P). I'll try to catch up with the group read, sadly I don't have much time to read lately.

message 17: by Ross (new)

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) Hi there everyone, I'm Ross, and I have both a confession and a question. The confession, I have never read any Pratchett before (ducks with the trusty dinner tray as a makeshift shield!) My question, if I may is if I start from the very beginning, which is to say The Colour of Magic would it be advisable to follow through in a linear sequence of numbers, or should I follow the miniseries within the multiseries of books? Say if I were to read Sourcery (Book 5) after The Light Fantastic (Book 2) will I miss out on plot elements introduced in books 3 and 4? Or can I skip without compromising the narrative?

message 18: by Mordechai (last edited Mar 25, 2015 08:00AM) (new)

Mordechai Housman | 75 comments Woolfie wrote: "...would it be advisable to follow through in a linear sequence of numbers, or should I follow the miniseries within the multiseries of books?..."

Welcome, Ross!

First of all, most of the books don't actually have a miniseries. Only a few do.

I would recommend reading miniseries in order, but not necessarily any of the others.

Most of the time it doesn't make a difference what order you read the books. TP himself wrote that he tried to write them so that it wouldn't matter (though he admitted that one book, I think it was "Witches Abroad," didn't quite work out that way).

Usuallly enough information is given to fill you in on whatever you need to know from previous books. By way of exception, the third Tiffany Aching book (I Shall Wear Midnight) is in places difficult to understand if you haven't read the second Tiffany Aching book (A Hat Full of Sky (Discworld, #32)), but otherwise I don't think the order matters much with most of TP's books.

There might be a few others like that.

message 19: by Mordechai (new)

Mordechai Housman | 75 comments Speaking of which, what does everyone here think about reading "The Light Fantastic" without first reading "The Colour of Magic?" It's been a while since I've read either.

message 20: by Mordechai (new)

Mordechai Housman | 75 comments Brian wrote: "MWe did read The Color of Magic for our first group read, but if you haven't read it, it's not very long so it might not be a bad idea to read them together. The length of both is not all that long, so you could fit both in a month. "

I know I could. In fact, I almost HAVE to, since my library's copy of The Light Fantastic is not available yet, so meanwhile I took out The Colour of Magic.

I'm simply asking whether someone new to TP could read The Light Fantastic before reading The Colour of Magic and still appreciate it? I would say not, but it's been a looooong time since I've read either of those two so I may not remember correctly.

Marlou Heijnen | 3 comments Hi Everyone,
I'm Marlou, and I've been reading Pterry for a few years now. Sadly, I'm one of those annoying bastards who absolutely has to read everything in order, so I haven't read them all. I've currently caught up to Lords and Ladies, and I've also read some Tiffany Aching books, Maurice and his Educated Rodents, some Johnny Maxwell books (Only you can save mankind was my first Terry Pratchett book actually) and the Long Earth.

My favourite books are probably the witches (girls=witches, boys=guards seems to be a rather common pattern, interestingly enough).

I just reread The Color of Magic just to get in the zone for reading The Light Fantastic. I figured it couldn't hurt. I enjoyed it and I found it funny. Plus I can see how he ended up developing things over the years. A nice blast from the past!

Now I'm waiting for my library to find the copy of The Light Fantastic that they say they have on hold for me. Sheesh.

Mark | 5 comments I'm Mark. Long time Pterry fan.Started reading his novels in 1993 when I was 11 and picked up Reaper Man, Eric and Truckers. Had to have the books bought for me after that as they were the only Pterry books in the children's section and I was too young to borrow from the Adult section. First one I bought for myself was Carpe Diem.

Favourite DW novels are The Thief of Time, Small Gods, Reaper Man and Maskerade.

Was into buying the Cunning Artificer's DW stamps a few years ago but had to stop as I was spending too much money. Still a member of the Emporium's forum.

I'll miss waiting for new books from the Master.

message 26: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Koh | 32 comments I realise I haven't yet introduced myself. My name is Shannon and I have been reading Discworld for more than 20 years. I can't remember which novel I read first but it's probably Guards! Guards! or one of the witches books.

I am still reading Discworld after all these years! I took a hiatus once and now that I'm back to it it's amazing to see how the characters have developed!

I'm now reading through the Watch series while alternating through the witches and Ankh-Morpork novels.

message 27: by Ian (new)

Ian | 9 comments Hi, Ian here - long time Pratchett fan virtually from the start - well I think I found the Colour of Magic in the library when, probably, Equal Rites was in the shops. Then it was a matter of buying everything, then waiting for the next publication date.
I can't believe I hadn't spotted this group before - so definitely joined now!

Ian | 9 comments Hi Shannon,
as I'd expect, everyone friendly on a Pratchett related group.
I probably shouldn't keep responding individually because I'll fill up the thread with me, and I'm not a complete egotist a promise.
On the other hand if I don't say 'Hi' people might think me rude - problems, problems...

message 32: by Terry (new)

Terry (color14u) | 1 comments Hi. My name is Terry. My bio for reading matches Brian's surprisingly. I read all kinds of books but my favorie authors Terry Pratchett, Stephen King and Agatha Christie. I own all but 4 of TP's novels. I don't have the newest one yet. (Don't flog me! :( I will be getting it. I made a master list years ago and as people asked what to get me I would check the list and tell them what I didn't have. I added the new and checked off the ones I had as they came in. I'm just happy to find a group where you don't have to explain who TP is!!!

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello, my name's Nicole and I'm not really a Terry Pratchett fan YET but I have decided to join this group as I start reading Discworld series so I would have people to talk to about it and maximize the experience :)

message 34: by Celise (new)

Celise (celise_) | 30 comments Hi Nicole. I've only recently started reading the Discworld novels too, and hopefully you find them as amazing as I have so far.

message 35: by Angel (new)

Angel 一匹狼 (rounintenshi) | 2 comments Hi, my name is Angel. I started reading Discworld novels around 16 years ago, after I had played the Discworld games on my playstation. I actually thought the books were based on the games and not the other way around...

As I continued to read his novels I became a fan, specially of his Watch novels (I really like Vimes).

I read all kinds of books but I have a soft spot for Pratchett, David Gemmell and Frank Herbert.

Cheers!

message 36: by Riverreed (new)

Riverreed Greenland Hi, My name is RiverReed. I started reading Pratchett when I was 8. He actually got me into reading. My mother had been going on for years on how brilliant reading was, and I used to just tell her to sell all the books. Then I decided to pick out a very old and battered copy of "The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents." Been hooked to both reading and Terry Pratchett since.

RC (rainchilde) | 6 comments Hello everyone,

I was introduced to Terry Pratchett through Good Omens, I was a big fan of Neil Gaiman (and still am). This year I've decided to re-read/read all the Disc books (and other Pratchett) in his honour. It's inspired me to find more fans and join some groups! So it's neat to be here.

As an aside, I saw the post about the book release party in the UK and ever since I've been searching for one in Toronto and haven't found one (which I think is surprising). So, if anyone hears of an event in the Toronto or Michigan area, let me know. Or if anyone wants to start one! We could even do a virtual read-a-thon!!!

Well, that's all - nice to meet you! Totally forgot to say my name, it's Michelle.

Sarah "Pippy" (pippyx) | 12 comments Ahoy hoy you lovely people.

I had my first taste of Terry Pratchett many moons ago in a mock English exam, there was a wee passage about a rather gangly young boy looking for an apprenticeship in the local Market, I wanted to read this book, but never found out what book the passage was from. Skip forward a few years and I was given a copy of Mort, clearly I was meant to read his books, as I fell in love with them. I regularly visit the Disc, not just in his books but within a text based game I have been playing since 2000. Which Sir Terry gave his permission to create back in 1996.

Anyhoot Hello all. :)

Paul (halfmanhalfbook) | 3 comments Hello everyone. Mt name is Paul, and I live in Dorset on the South coast of England. I have been a Pratchett fan for years, I think he was one of the most original and satirical authors around, not to say funniest either. I have wide ranging reading interests, with a particular interest in sci fi, fantasy and travel and natural history. Feel free to send me a friend request.

message 42: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Hi, I'm Melissa. My first intro to Terry Pratchett was the Witches collection in DiscWorld.Terry's books. make me laugh and struggle to put it down. How wonderful.Along with Mr P's works, I am a huge fan of Agatha Christie. The genre I most associate with is of course fantasy and then crime, thrillers and paranormal running closely behind.I enjoy some YA books also. When did they get so good, good enough for adults to read? great when I've had a very busy shift working.Lastly, I love cats. That is all.

Ria (ban1chka) | 4 comments Hello, everyone! My name's Maria (Ria). My first experience with Sir Pratchett was when my sister recommended 'Wyrd Sisters' to me. I was about ten years old and I remember having the feeling that the book is good and funny, but that I can't really understand it, so I put it down after a few pages. Years later I tried reading 'Mort', 'Reaper man' and 'Wintersmith', but unfortunately didn't finish either of them - due to lack of time, mostly. I do remember this one scene from 'Reaper Man', though, where (*Spoilers*) Death was reaping and he was cutting each stem individually and when the farmer (I think it was a farmer?) asked him, "Why are you cutting them one by one?", he replied, "That's the only way I know." (*End of spoilers*) It was when I read this scene that I knew I was in love with Terry Pratchett. After he passed away in March, I set out to read all the Discworld novels. I also have some of his other works at home, but I'll leave those for later.
I started with the Rincewind miniseries and am currently reading "Sourcery". Unfortunately, I might have to stop for a while, becauses I'm having trouble finding "(Faust) Eric".
Anyway. I should lay off the details, sorry. Except for fantasy, which I obviously love, I read pretty much everything, though I tend not to be particularly impressed by romance.

You don't really need to read them in order. That's the beauty of discworld.

After 7 years and multiple re-reads of the world of Terry Pratchett I think it's safe to say I consider him to be my favorite author, and I'm beyond ecstatic that such a nice and respectful group exists on Goodreads :)
(Also, I am posting this about ten minutes after the creation of my Goodreads account so I'd love for someone to show me the ropes. Have a great Hogswatch!)

I don't know if I know all the ropes although I've been on Goodreads for a while. I mostly figured things out by trying them (joining groups, searching for books and such) but one thing that might be useful is that when you join a new group make sure you check how often you want to get e-mails from them or you might be swamped! Welcome!
