Annette Mckitrick | 29 comments In this inspirational and heartfelt story we meet Jabu living in South Africia during the apartheid years on the day his mother dies. His feelings of heartbreak and homelessness causes him run without looking back, but unfortunately quickly connects with a gang of train surfers causing his life to go even further in a downward spiral. One unexpected day on a beach Jabu crosses paths with Kyle, a boy from a privileged background, forming and unexpected friendship based around the love of surfing. His life changes forever,
The added glossary in the beginning of the story is a great guide in understanding South African terms and culture. I highly recommend this easy to read book for reluctant readers especially those with a love of surfing. There is a sequel ‘ Saving Thandi.’

Jane (janeboniface) | 123 comments Thanks Annette - it's always good to have a recommendation for a book suitable for reluctant readers, especially if it includes a sporting theme.

Kate (kate_s_richards) | 2 comments Hi there, Thanks for recommending Trainsurfer! I'm the author and wanted to add that Trainsurfer is on a list of books recommended for schools by NZATE and NZRead Te Pou Muramura.
Book 2, Saving Thandi is an eco-adventure and book 3, Nikau's Escape is set in New Zealand and was launched this year. They can all be read as stand alone adventures.
If teachers are reading any of my books and would like a free video chat with your class, please get in touch. katerichardsbooks@gmail.com
