Shaun Horton | 324 comments So, I'm planning to start doing some Horror video game play-throughs and streaming starting next year. To add video game reviews to the things I do in my quest to rule the internet. It really has to be said too that we've had no shortage of great games to play recently, so I'm making a list to work from.

So far, I'm restricted to PS3/PS4 and minimalist PC games. So here's my list so far, what do you all think of these games and what others do you think I should add or that I need to know about?

Dead Space 1,2,3
Alien: Isolation
The Evil Within
Five Nights at Freddy's
The Last of Us
Resident Evil (can't wait for the original remastered version!)
Outlast
Bioshock

Any others I need to check out or that you would recommend to the group?

Steven (tbones) | 133 comments Where's the Silent Hill games or Fatal Frame if those are downloadable.

message 3: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Horton | 324 comments Oh yeah. The new Silent Hill definitely. I don't know whether the older Silent Hill or the Fatal Frame games are available for download or not. I might get into the older games if I can, but it depends on how well this all works out, and I dunno with the old graphics and things. (God, I absolutely HATED the Resident Evil Controls before RE4.)

I don't want this thread to be all about me though, so what other horror games have you all played and enjoyed?

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

Dead Space 1 and 2 were super good. 3 I couldn't get into for some reason. I am currently playing Evil Within which is more fun than actually scary. The Last of Us is AMAZING!!!! Outlast was fun except the PS4 I played on kept deleting my game xp. And finally, Bioshock will forever be my favourite game of all time. I don't even know how many times I played it.

message 5: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Horton | 324 comments I love the Dead Space series. The first was straight awesome. The second was more to the first one like Aliens is to Alien. Yeah, the third one was good, but it just didn't grab you like the first two did. I think they could have done so much more with it than they did.

Charles | 51 comments What do guys think of ALAN WAKE?

message 7: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3059 comments The Evil Within looks pretty good.

The Darkness is worth checking out, They made another one to it last year too.

message 8: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments I loved Alan Wake. Also, no game has scared me more than the old two disc Alone in the Dark. The next gen one was awful though...sad to say. There was a great horror game called Eternal Darkness too. I was disappointed that they stopped production on Guillermo Del Toro's game. He said he's not giving up though

I played Eternal Darkness on the Nintendo Game Cube, it was nuts. It would do things like say your controller wasn't working in the middle of fights so you'd die, but then you'd automatically regenerate so it was basically just screwing with your mind lol

message 10: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Horton | 324 comments I had not heard of Alan Wake before. I see it's an Xbox/PC game though which probably explains that.

I saw Eternal Darkness on the GameCube once. Trippy game, with insects randomly starting to crawl across the tv, and it even gave us the Windows blue crash screen.

message 11: by Chisto (new)

Chisto Healy | 30 comments Yes! They should have made another eternal darkness for the newer systems.

message 12: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 133 comments Oh and I don't know if it is downloadable or not but a re-release of Eternal Darkness that came out for the Game Cube would be cool. Oh yeah and Alan Wake is really cool too. Oh and there were those ones or one that took place in the prison that Stan Winston's group did the effects for. Oh and an awesome game for the PS2 was Extermination and there was a game made from the movie The Thing

message 13: by Aly (new)

Aly | 24 comments I think Until Dawn for PS4 and Silent Hills looks good when they come out.

message 14: by Aly (last edited Dec 28, 2014 02:29PM) (new)

Aly | 24 comments Anyone heard of Everybody's gone to the Rapture? Not sure if it will be any good when it comes out. I have played The Evil Within and it is great! The Last of Us is also very good, I think

message 15: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Horton | 324 comments I've had some people argue that The Last of Us isn't a horror game because of the intense story and the drama.

message 16: by Aly (new)

Aly | 24 comments I like games with a story to them but that is my opinion. I'm not sure why horror games can't have story lines anyway? :) I think they can and can still be great!

Do we you have access to a PS2? There were some great games for that. For what it's worth here is a list of good, creepy games.

PS2:
Fatal Frame series 1-3 (available in PS3 shop)

Silent Hill series,in my opinion you should NOT miss out on SH2 in particular. (Silent Hill 1 is available through PSN store, 2 & 3 have an hd collection out for PS3)

Clock Tower, original and Clock Tower 3 (Click Tower is PS1, Clock Tower PS2)

Rule of Rose (PS2)

Kuon (very overlooked but great, PS2)

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (the game most in need of a sequel)

F.E.A.R. series (I add this one hesitantly because to me fps does not work well with horror imo)

Slender man The Arrival is available in PSN

Hysteria is in PSN store and was pretty cool. The second one though I think is meant to be played on the Vita.

Corpse Party & Corpse Party: Book of Shadows are in the PSN store but can only be played on a PSP or Vita

The Evil Within (I thought it was great visuals but kind of lacking in story or characterization but very pretty)

Until recently I thought horror was dying a slow death on the newer consoles but it looks like it might be coming back. Fingers crossed! That's all I have for now but let me think on it a bit. I should be able to come up with some more.

message 19: by Harsh (new)

Harsh Kumar (harshkumar) | 187 comments Suffering and the suffering part 2 ties that bind are also good. When it comes to horror I think fatal frame is the best , evil dead games have humour as well.

message 20: by Harsh (new)

Harsh Kumar (harshkumar) | 187 comments Obscure to name another

message 21: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3059 comments 2 weeks ago I beat The Darkness. Definitely want to get the 2nd one now.

message 22: by GracieKat (new)

GracieKat | 195 comments Siren and Siren:Blood Curse, not sure if the first one is in the Sony store but Blood Curse definitely is.

message 23: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Horton | 324 comments Well, doing Let's Plays isn't working out quite yet, but I did manage to upgrade to the PS4, which means playing a bunch of the games on my list.

Here's my review of The Last of Us.

message 24: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Horton | 324 comments So, I streamed my game-play of Outlast, which I finished last night. My review is up today.

Josh Shiben | 6 comments Amnesia: The Dark Descent was terrifying. Definitely check that one out. I think it's probably pretty cheap on Steam now.

message 27: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Horton | 324 comments More nice suggestions.

So my review of Alien: Isolation is up.

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) | 176 comments I do Gianfranco! I loved it even though the acting wasn't the best. Phantasmagoria Two actually did have superior acting, although I didn't think the game itself was as good.

message 34: by Dannibal (new)

Dannibal | 39 comments No one has commented on this thread in a very long time, which is sad. I loooooove horror games, though I can only play on PC right now. I only started playing games about 2 years ago, and unfortunately haven't played as many as I would like (partly because my computer sucks; I lack money to buy games usually; and I get frequent tendonitis flare-ups in my wrists, so I often have to take breaks between games).

My favorite games are definitely Outlast, Whistleblower (the Outlast DLC), and Dead Space 1 & 2.

I really wish I could play Resident Evil 7 and Outlast 2, but there's no way my PC can handle the graphics (I couldn't even get through The Evil Within).

With you on the horror games, love ‘em too. It’s a shame you can’t play Resi Evil 7, it was by far the best since 4. Both Dead Space games were awesome, and going back further the Silent Hill games were also memorable.

Hmm I haven't System Shock 2; I might check it out. Amnesia was actually the first horror game I played. It has really great atmosphere, but other than that, I didn't find it that scary really. I recently finished Layers of Fear which the atmosphere kinda reminded me a little of Amnesia, but I loved the graphics of it (i.e. going into a room, turning around, and everything is changed).

I was watching part of a playthrough of the Res Evil 7 Demo on VR the other day; it looked amazing! Idk if the entire game is in VR or not; I haven't bothered to check since I can't play it anyhow right now.

The only Silent Hill game I've played so far is Silent Hill 2, which my best friend recommended.

message 37: by Mixofsunandcloud (new)

Mixofsunandcloud | 538 comments The latest Humble Bundle has a couple that might count:

https://www.humblebundle.com/games/ho...

The Killing Floor is supposed to be survival horror (never played) and you can get that for only a dollar, I haven't tried any of the games in it and don't really plan to. It just showed up in my email today, and since money and computing power are an issue, I thought it was worth mentionning.

message 38: by Dannibal (new)

Dannibal | 39 comments Thanks for the heads up. I'll check it out. :)

message 39: by Harsh (new)

Harsh Kumar (harshkumar) | 187 comments Fatal Frame.

The Suffering 1 and 2

message 40: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 452 comments I watched boyfriend play through Resident Evil 7. That was pretty good. Not too scary but pretty good.

I'm about to start a play through of Resident Evil 0. My boyfriend is terrified of spiders so I need to research where the spiders are first.

Our highlight over the past few years has been PT. We're so sad that Silent Hills is no more :(

message 41: by Marie (new)

Marie | 4075 comments As far as the Resident Evil series, 1, 2, and 3 to me were the best on the PlayStation as during the time they came out, there really wasn't anything that scary that had come out on a system to the point you were jumping at shadows as you became involved in the games. Then when Silent Hill debuted, that took the creepy factor to a whole different level. That was one freaky game!

Those first three games were great, and the fourth was possibly even better. They then lost their way with the next instalments and became too action-based, but RE7 was a bit of a return to form. With you on Silent Hill too.

message 43: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) I always feel Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (for the Wii) was overlooked - it's a really clever re-imagining of the first game that tries to personalise its horror based on a psychological profile of the player. Never seen another game do anything like it.

You are right, Greg, as RE4 was really good, but then somehow after that all the RE's just went downhill. It was like they were trying to recapture the essence of the first RE games, but just could not find their previous groove. I haven't played RE7, but I have seen trailers of it and it does look like they finally were able to capture that creepy crawly zombie feeling of terror. :)

It seemed like they abandoned the game’s horror roots and went for a bland, generic action style to lure in more casual gamers. Anyhow, would definitely recommend 7 if you ever get a chance to play it. It’s back to proper horror, but is different to the earlier games and has a bit of a grimy, Texas Chainsaw Massacre feel to it.

Would’ve liked to have played this but never had a Wii. The first three games were very good though and it’s a shame they abandoned a new one. The PT playable demo that was available was genuinely terrifying and who knows what they could have done with a whole game.

message 47: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5131 comments The Switch has some good ones that u can prob purchase on Steam too. Just played Count Lucanor and that was pretty creepy and fun. Coma looks good too. I think it’s survival horror.

Oooh...I haven't heard of this one before, and I do have a Wii (that I almost never use). I really enjoyed Silent Hill 2, so I will have to look into this one.

I would recommend Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

An action rpg/fist-person-shooter that allows you to become a vampire. Besides all the rich modern vampire lore and dense atmosphere of the nocturnal Los Angeles, the game also features a mission in which you have to exorcise and curselift a haunted hotel. To me, ghosts and poltergeists are not especially scary, but that mission always gives me the creeps.
