Hey HistFic lovers - can anybody recommend novels set in biblical times? I've read two by Eleanor de Jong that I absolutely adored:

Delilah & Jezebel

And in fact I loved these books so much that they inspired me to write my own novel, set in ancient Babylon c.1750 BC. They really sparked my interest in the ancient landscape and sent me off to do some research - now I love ancient history just as much as medieval.

I've got The Red Tent still to read, and have tried but failed to get into Mary, Called Magdalene by Margaret George. Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated :-)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments No worries.

I just wanted to ensure it was in a place where people would know you're looking for a book, rather than just noting a particular book fit within a particular period.

Otherwise, it would possibly get missed by someone who could offer you a suggestion.

The only one I can recommend (And I didn't read it but it was a group read here a while back) is Iscariot: A Novel of Judas

Dawn (caveatlector) I don't read books in this era but I have looked for a few of them to buy a girlfriend of mine. It does seem that most of them are about the women in the bible.

Orson Scott Card has this Women of Genesis series:
Sarah (Women of Genesis, #1) by Orson Scott Card Rebekah (Women of Genesis, #2) by Orson Scott Card Rachel & Leah (Women of Genesis, #3) by Orson Scott Card

Marek Halter has the Canaan trilogy:
Sarah (Canaan, #1) by Marek Halter Zipporah, Wife of Moses (Canaan, #2) by Marek Halter Lilah (Canaan, #3) by Marek Halter & Mary of Nazareth by Marek Halter

Gerald N. Lund has a series about the followers of Jesus:
Fishers of Men (The Kingdom and the Crown, #1) by Gerald N. Lund Come Unto Me (The Kingdom and the Crown, #2) by Gerald N. Lund Behold the Man (The Kingdom and the Crown, #3) by Gerald N. Lund

Kimber (kimberlibri) | 785 comments Sinners and the Sea: The Untold Story of Noah's Wife is a good one. You might also enjoy Isle of Womanand the rest from Piers Anthony's Geodyssey series. They lean towards the more fantastical than fact but an interesting read.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Personally I liked Paul L. Maier's books

The Flames of Rome by Paul L. Maier about the spread of Christianity to Rome and Vespians rise to the throne

and

Pontius Pilate by Paul L. Maier about the events of the Crucifixion from Pilate's view point - very sympathetic to Pilate

Dawn (caveatlector) And I was thinking that Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ and The Robe would also fit this request.

I've only watched the movies myself but I hear the books are supposed to be better.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I read The Robe a few yrs ago and I thought it was much, much better than the movie, and I really like the movie. I have never gotten around to reading Ben-Hur.
