Join us on March 7th to discuss French author Christophe Chaboute's haunting graphic novel Alone. This international bestseller is now available in English for the first time.

Terry Mulcahy | 21 comments I will read this. But I couldn't find a copy yet, so unfortunately, I won't be there Saturday. Missed February meeting for the same
reason.

Terry Mulcahy | 21 comments I am so glad this book was picked. I couldn't get a copy until a few days ago, and I really like it. Love that it was in black & white - perfect for this story. While I've said I prefer graphic novels heavy on dialogue and light on art, this, like a few others, tells a wonderful story with very few words. I enjoyed every one of the 368 pages, and took my time with each one.
(It is the perfect book for this period of "reading in the time of corona".)
I especially loved Alone's imagination -- as it is his only friend. The things he comes up with based on his limited interpretations of dictionary entries are at once funny and tragic. But also telling, for who among us has not misinterpreted something based on limited information? Who among us has never felt isolated? or shunned? or yearned for more out of life? Chabouté captured things about the human spirit, inventiveness, and the need for travel, adventure, and companionship that we all need to be reminded of in the time of coronavirus. Has anyone read his other books?

I'm so glad you enjoyed this. I connected with this book so deeply, and I keep thinking about it. Thanks so much for sharing these insights.

I haven't read any of Chaboute's other books, but I'm particularly curious about Moby Dick.

This book was very popular with the entire group for many of the reasons you mentioned, with an average rating of 8.1!
