Now I like that "open society" Amy. Especially if its a recent "coming out" and we are following how "regular" humans adapt to the knowledge that there really ARE things that go bump in the night out there.
There is a new series out where the OPPOSITE is true. Dying Bites The Bloodhound Filesby DD Barant. There is only the 1 book so far. In that book, an FBI profiler from our world is pulled to a world where humans represent only 1% of the entire world population. That was a really interesting premis.
There is also the Atlantis Rising Warriors of Poseidon books. While in that world the Vamps and Weres have come out of the closet, the Warriors (who are guardians of humanity) are still undercover.
If you don't mind YA there is The Angel Experiment and the other 3 books in the Maximum Ride universe. This is one of those "the government or someone has been indulging in gene splicing and stuff and created mutants." Then some of the created creatures manage to escape and are trying to survive without being killed by us regular humans OR being recaptured by the crazied scientists who created them.
(BTW--why are scientist in these books ALWAYS crazied? I mean, talk about a negative stereotype. Is it any wonder that kids don't want to study math and science any more?)
Er, anyway. . .
There is the Dresden Files books (altho book 1 Storm Front is slow, slow, slow. While Dresden himself has "come out of the wizard's closet" most of the rest of the "creatures of the night" (and the other wizards) are all still very firmly in the closet. These are very UF rather than PNR. But still good stories.
Further authors you can check out--Lynsay Sands, Gena Showalter, Katie MacAlister, Erin McCarthy, Annette Blair, Candace Havens (altho some of her books have the supe's out and some don't) and of course MaryJanice Davidson.
Oh--I almost forgot to include Patricia Briggs, Mercedes Lackey and Tanya Huff.
There are others as well, but lets let you get through these um, well couple of hundred books first. :o)

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead this is similar to Twilight and Mortal Instruments it is a YA series.I loved this series! Hope you read it and enjoy it.
Ok, while I will admit to my earlier complaint about evil scientist--most of the ones of my acquaintance are a little lacking in common sense, they aren't EVIL. And yeah, I know a lot of scientist. Hubby is one, I live in an area with a high concentration of government, science, military and federal type peoples (Washington DC area.)
well, most of the ones that I know don't. Fortunately most of them DO have enough sense to at least marry someone with some. My hubby is one of the ones that DOES have common sense, so he manages to keep people fairly down to earth at work. Sigh, the poor baby comes home some days totally wiped from having to put up with them.
To add to the suggestions in the PNR genre:
Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunters[image error] Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark
[image error] Larissa Ione's Demonica
Gena Showalter's The Lords of the Underworld
Lynn Viehl's Darkyn

Glad you saw something that you found interesting. I just finished the last book in the Midnight Breed series last week. The BDB series is one of my faves! Hope you like it.
Re: Crazed scientists.Yikes! I was just helping a friend plot her new story and we made the scientist crazy evil! Back to the drawing board :) (Even though crazy evil is such fun to write.)
Nalini Singh's Psy/Changling stories have some not crazy scientist types.
As for open/closed societies, I like how Patricia Briggs in the Mercy Thompson books rides the line between what regular people know -- or think they know -- and what they don't know at all about vamps, weres & whatnot.
I'm on board with J.R. Ward and the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Currently I am reading Covet, also by JR Ward and I am loving this new series!
The Morganville Vampires series (first book, Glass Houses) is kind of both open and closed society. It's a fascinating premise and I really enjoyed it, but it's more paranormal than romance. Also, the Undead series by MaryJanice Davidson is closed, and it's hilarious. It was my first paranormal romance series and got me hooked on the genre.
