Mark | 5 comments Cheery littlebottom, devolved into a really good character with some scene stealing greatness.

message 2: by Catherine (new)

Catherine McClelland (rugbydeprofundis) | 2 comments My favorite character is Rincewind because I identify with him completely.

message 3: by Kaya (new)

Kaya Fletcher I haven't read very many Terry Pratchett novels, but out of the ones I have read, Susan is my favorite. Her attitude towards her grandfather and the shenanigans he leads her into is very amusing to me.

message 4: by Glenno (new)

Glenno (glenno54) | 13 comments At the moment Mr 'Slightly Damp' von Lipwig but edging closely behind him is Dick Simnel. Being British I am really enjoying listening to the Audio book of Raising Steam where the narrator has got Dick's northern English accent off to perfection.
My favourites change on a regular basis - can I favourite them all?

message 5: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 58 comments Oook!

Or, in translation -- the Librarian.

message 6: by Gabriella (new)

Gabriella | 3 comments Granny Weatherwax. she is the best woman in literature I know of.

message 7: by Madeline (new)

Madeline Barton | 3 comments Granny Wetherwax...no...Death...no, wait...Vimes...no, hang on, it must be Carrot, or Angua, or maybe the Patrician...hang on - what about Rincewind...? And the Luggage...?

This thread is too hard...

message 8: by Mordechai (last edited Feb 17, 2015 09:02AM) (new)

Mordechai Housman | 75 comments I agree with Madeline that it is too difficult to choose. To paraphrase Will Rogers, I've never met a Discworld character I didn't like. I think Rincewind might be at the top, though, since, like Catherine (message 3), I identify with him too closely. He's sort of the Charlie Brown of Discworld. But actually, I also liked Mort, and it's a shame he doesn't show up in more books. Susan (his daughter) does, but he doesn't really. And yes, Susan is a grand character. I like her and I like the idea of her.

Mordechai Housman | 75 comments Brian wrote: "...Rincewind to Charlie Brown is also an excellent comparison. I've always thought they were very sim..."

Funny, I never tought of it until the day I wrote that comment. But then, I've never before been in a situation where I could discuss Pratchett's books.

message 10: by José (new)

José (lectorconstante19) I've only read a few of the guard series so I'm probably missing many awesome characters but my favourites so far are Vimes and Detritus with his "Piecemaker",I love the description of that weapon makes me laugh every time.

message 11: by Mark (last edited Mar 12, 2015 12:36PM) (new)

Mark Ford (babel-fish) Gaspode, he is the dogs bollocks.

The Luggage, it certainly packs more than a punch.

Carrot. for a dwarf he sets the bar pretty high.

C.M.O.T Dibbler, the Arthur Daley/Derek Trotter of the discworld, "sosig in a bun" anyone.

That's it for now, though there is the entire population of the disc to pick from and every one, even the ones that don't last more than a line or two are a brilliant observation on the nature of being human/dwarf/troll/vampire/etc.

message 12: by Mordechai (last edited Mar 18, 2015 08:28AM) (new)

Mordechai Housman | 75 comments The Dibbler is also funny in the way TP created a counterpart for him in almost every major city on the Discworld. That, he did well.

I didn't think that TP did well in Interesting Times when he transplanted the Unseen University faculty to the small horde. It was a great book, but he could have crafted some new characters there, and it would have been better, imo.

message 13: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Koh | 32 comments I think that it may be rare but I really like Carrot. He's innocent, to a degree ;)

message 15: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 58 comments Carrot is great fun. I think I like him better in the later books, where (view spoiler)

message 16: by Mark (new)

Mark | 5 comments I think Lu Tze and Susan are my favourite characters which is probably why The Thief of Time is one on my favourites.

message 17: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 3 comments I also identify with Rincewind. The Luggage is a force to be reckoned with, though. I think Death is my favorite character if I'm forced to choose. The end of Reaper Man made me cry.

message 18: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (spyrodoodle) I haven't read enough Pratchett books yet to say for sure but so far my favourite character is Death. Mainly because he makes me feel a whole lot more comfortable about dying one day, would't be so bad if he was with you when it ends!

Riverreed Greenland Hannah wrote: "I haven't read enough Pratchett books yet to say for sure but so far my favourite character is Death. Mainly because he makes me feel a whole lot more comfortable about dying one day, would't be so..."

He doesn't show up for everyone though.

message 20: by Alexandria (new)

Alexandria Blaelock (goodreadscomalexblaelock) | 7 comments Toughie, but I have to go with THE Luggage.

When I first read about it, I stopped having handbags, backpacks and suitcases and started having Luggage. Sadly no freshly pressed garments smelling faintly of lavender yet.

message 21: by Igy The Book Hermit (last edited Feb 29, 2016 06:33PM) (new)

Igy The Book Hermit My favorite characters would be :
DEATH
Granny Weatherwax
The Librarian
Rincewind

message 22: by Nick (new)

Nick Harrison | 1 comments Favourite character has to be Granny Weatherwax followed by the Patrician, as they are strong independent, get their own way and of course not to be messed with.

message 23: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Hallberg | 5 comments Vimes !!
( I think i am getting old and my line of thinking is changing... as before would be Rincewind :P )
Second ... Moist Von Lipwig ( if nothing else just the name deserve a honorary mention :) ).

message 24: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Holmes | 13 comments This is a hard one. Death, Granny Weatherwax and actually all of the witches.

message 25: by Merel (new)

Merel (blackbird20) | 4 comments I really liked Teppic for Pyramids, how he tried to make changes for the people in his kingdom. And Esk from Equal Rites, how she didn't stop from getting what she wanted.
And ofcourse DEATH is amazing :)

message 26: by Matteo (new)

Matteo Bortolotti | 2 comments DEATH because, well, he's DEATH, he's an amazing characters and offers a completely new perspective on life and everything about it, then there's Granny Weatherwax because she's sheer awesomeness and one of the best examples of Good is not Nice, and for my love of manipulative characters I'd also mention both Havelock Vetinari and captain Carrot.

message 27: by Highlandtown (last edited Jan 12, 2018 03:22PM) (new)

Highlandtown My “read” list only include the guards, witches and a few others....favorites are. Vimes, Granny Weatherwax, LuTze, Nanny Ogg, Ankh Morpork.

Igy The Book Hermit Madeline wrote: "Granny Wetherwax...no...Death...no, wait...Vimes...no, hang on, it must be Carrot, or Angua, or maybe the Patrician...hang on - what about Rincewind...? And the Luggage...?

I forgot about Corp Carrot.

Igy The Book Hermit Maggie wrote: "This is a hard one. Death, Granny Weatherwax and actually all of the witches."
I love Granny.

message 30: by Kelly (new)

Kelly g (bumpycastle) | 2 comments Everyone's lovin on granny weatherwax and I haven't read any in that series. Looks like I know where I'm headed after Night Watch.

Igy The Book Hermit Mordechai wrote: "The Dibbler is also funny in the way TP created a counterpart for him in almost every major city on the Discworld. That, he did well.

I forgot about Dibbler also.

Igy The Book Hermit Gabriella wrote: "Granny Weatherwax. she is the best woman in literature I know of."
Well written.

message 33: by Celise (new)

Celise (celise_) | 30 comments Hello! Popping into this thread because I started back into the series.

I'm loving Vimes at the moment in Guards! Guards! And Carrot because he reminds me a little of Twoflower for some reason.

I think I would like Granny Weatherwax more, I just don't enjoy the witches books overly much.

message 34: by Archimedes Grimm (new)

Archimedes Grimm | 4 comments In no particular order:
Susan Sto Heliot - because she's practical, uses common sense and has that no-nonsense thing about her. I wish I could be a teacher like her. No seriously, her abilities would really come in handy.
Death - His absolute ability to completely misunderstand humans while still trying to keep humanity safe (while still doing his job, of course) is just so endearing.
Granny Weatherwax - because she is sheer awesomeness incarnate.
Moist von Lipwig - I don't know what it is about his books I enjoy so much, but he is definitely part of the equation.

message 35: by Robert (new)

Robert (robertgilescampbell) Esemerelda Weatherwax by a long shot for me....likely because she was the first character I read when I was introduced to the Discworld.

The story was....The Sea and little fishes

Igy The Book Hermit DEATH
Granny Weatherwax
Corp Carrot
Cut Me Own Throat
Rincewind
The Librarian

message 37: by Laura (last edited Dec 09, 2017 12:31AM) (new)

Laura (edda123) | 2 comments Death, or the Patrician. :D I also really liked Mr. Saveloy, however brief his appearance was.

message 38: by Olga (new)

Olga | 1 comments Hello, everyone!
My favourite one is ... Vetinari! Adore him and what (and how) he does! And Angua surely! This werewolf is awesome)

(P.S.Since Terry Pratchett's characters have not just simple names but names like Mr Teatime or Carrot Ironfoundersson, I didn't get from what Ponder Stibbons made of. Can anyone explain?)

message 39: by Tomi (new)

Tomi | 1 comments Thanks for the comments everyone—I’ve enjoyed reading who your favorites are and why. I go back and forth between Susan, Lu Tze, Death and Vetinari. It really is sad that Terry Pratchett isn’t with us anymore to write more of these lovely books. They always seem to do the trick when I need a little break from “real life.”

message 40: by Nechama (new)

Nechama (teajoygreye) | 4 comments If I had to narrow it down to my top 5...

Susan & Vimes are my favorites, but Granny Weatherwax, Moist Von Lipwig, and Maladict are close runners up.

message 41: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin | 1 comments Nanny Ogg, Vetinari, and DEATH.

message 42: by Simen (new)

Simen Oem | 1 comments No love for my man Mort?

message 43: by Vivian (new)

Vivian | 2 comments Oh man, how can anyone decide? They're all so awesome! Of course, I'm especially fond of the Witches. Also, I used to write fanfics about Susan Sto Helit. She's really interesting.

message 44: by lupine (new)

lupine (lupinevendetta) | 1 comments For favorite character I'd have to say Death. I love his unhurried, almost nonchalant approach to everything! I honestly think he might be Pratchett's truest voice. Sam Vimes is a close second, though, and the constables of Ankh-Morpork in general (with perhaps Cheery and Angua as notable standouts).

message 45: by Condwiramurs (new)

Condwiramurs (adaraschia) | 1 comments Death and Sam Vimes are my top favourites, but I’ve got a weakness for basically all of the main cast. If there was Vimes jewelry I’d be eyeing it (I already got the Death ring. 8’D)

message 46: by Josie (new)

Josie (josiedoefer) | 2 comments Moist Von Lipwig, he's so wonderfully, yet deservedly, long suffering and clever.

message 47: by Chris (new)

Chris Langer | 1 comments I’m not sure if I can choose just one. I love the roguish charm of Moist, but Lord Vetinari steals absolutely every scene he’s in. Choices, choices.

message 48: by jason peart (new)

jason peart | 1 comments I have read the first 13 books so far, love them all apart from moving pictures. My favourite character has to be Granny Weatherwax.
