One of the more interesting threads in this book for me is about what is, or what it means to be, a "hermit." The author makes the case that Chris doesn't fit any of the definitions of a hermit. Do you agree?

Tommy Carbone | 21 comments I'd certainly classify Knight as a hermit. There have been other Maine "hermits" - one who was known to be a skilled guide, another who was running cocaine and had money, that I'd question as being hermits. But Knight, that long, in that camp, alone - he's a hermit in my book.
We all might be termed modern-day hermits over the next month.

Tom - tonight's beer - Lone Pine Maple Sunday - broke into the pack ahead of next weekend...

My selection tonight: Frye's Leap IPA, one of my old favorites.

So true about us all being hermits for awhile!

How is that Maple beer? I meant to get some last year after I heard about it, but never did.
I feel like Knight fits the hermit mold. I guess going into the community to steal might exclude him, but it isn't so much about living off the land as about living without contact in solitude, by choice.

The beer is good - I tried it last year for the first time. We added a can of it into the crock pot with the corned beef to cook all day. Delicious.

Linda Gatz | 11 comments The corned beef and maple beer idea sounds excellent! I'm motivated to break quarantine to get some!

But what differentiates him from the three hermit models that the author defines is that he didn't commit to this lifestyle with any particular goal in mind. Not enlightenment, or protest, etc. That said, he seemed to still achieve some enlightenment despite himself, which will lead me to my third question tomorrow ...

Ah - I think you comment, " to this lifestyle" brought something to light for me. This hits on my problem with part of the author's premise - Finkel seemed to want to fit Knight into some mold - of a social recluse in a modern sense - for some goal. Did Knight articulate this to Finkel? Or did Knight leave his life, just to be left alone.
