When Beatty talks about how everyone wants to be happy so they stopped reading things that upset them. It's not really about the government censored them, (Yes, that's what is has come to now) but it started off as the people just not wanting to be offended or upset by the things they read, they didn't want to be upset by difficult to understand philosophies, they wanted simple, quick, bite sized information. So they quarantined themselves into only read and access information that made them "happy", and nothing that challenged their thoughts or their beliefs.
And it can be brought back around to today with the tendencies of people to read "most of an article online" because the whole article can't keep their attention long enough. Or People that only read things that align with their thoughts, without even giving a chance to someone else's ideas. I think the reason this book is still so popular is that it resonated with the audience when it was written, and it's something that is valid with today's audience.
