Nik Krasno | 19874 comments Some people, who were spending lots of time home anyway, may feel unaffected, however for those sidelined to home base it might be kinda new experience. Maybe refreshing at first, it may soon become ... boring.
Sure, playing games online, video chatting, goodreads, sending tons of memes, posts, videos on whatsapp groups, etc increase exponentially maybe even steeper than virus' graphs. Yet, there is always room for additional creative ideas to productively and/or joyfully spend time indoors despite certain inconveniences of unexpected shortages of essentials. So, what are your recipes?

Marie | 643 comments Well I just moved into a new apartment so I will be fixing up the place as now things need to be unpacked, put away, and hung up on the walls.

Yeah definitely going to be heading into boredom mode after all that as it seems in the great city of Tampa where I live they are thinking of literally shutting down the city and no one will be able to go anywhere except to the grocery store, gas station, and the doctor.

Our state of Florida has already shut down all beaches (no enjoying the salty air and the white sands), all malls and some shopping stores (will not be able to buy any new clothes or shoes for awhile...oh well.. there is always online shopping), all restaurants and bars have been shut down throughout the state (no dine-in - only takeout) and all fitness centers in the state have been shut down as well. Not only that but the apartment complex that I moved into shut down their pools and fitness centers as well. Not going to be able to enjoy the good life for awhile it seems. lol

Going to have to do some of those activites you mentioned up there Nik and add one more activity - reading the pile of books on my tbr. lol :)

Nik Krasno | 19874 comments Some pundits predict a baby boom in 9-10 months, as a sort of counter strike to the virus :)

message 6: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8082 comments More power to those who have baby-making means :-) Killing time? Unwise. You don't know how much of it you have left, and you definitely know it's running out. Only those with a lack of imagination or curiosity want to kill time.

message 7: by W (new)

W So,in quarantine what should be the most constructive use of time by those with limited time left ? One thing should be attended to,making a will.

message 8: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan I'm still working. My job can be done from home, so not much difference for me so far.

A good idea to have one of those in any event.

Anne Attias (anneattias) | 50 comments Now that my regular lifestyle has come to a stop, there are many practical jobs that need attention, housework is always there, so why do I prefer to write,
think about art painting or simply sit in the beautiful sunshine reading. I am still doing my keep fit routine and going for local walks for fresh air. People seem to be more active on Facebook etc. Time is still going fast but in a surreal way with everybody keeping their distance. How quickly the world is shutting down. Let's hope it goes as swiftly as it came.

message 11: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8082 comments Let's hope! Introverts like me have always been okay with spending time alone and enjoying solitary pursuits. Life these days isn't that different from my life pre-virus. My son, on the other hand, is missing socializing.

We'll set up graduating tests to evaluate the progress by the end of the corona limitations. Maybe we'll borrow one of those: https://www.thoughtco.com/french-prof... :)

message 15: by W (new)

W That's good news,Nick. When are the corona limitations set to end ?

message 16: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19874 comments W wrote: "That's good news,Nick. When are the corona limitations set to end ?"

Not set, but the countries will be gradually phasing them out as soon as the peaking reverses. We'd need to learn to live aside the virus, no other choice, until the vaccine or cure are found. My estimate - second half of April, beginning of March countries mostly affected now will embark on an exit strategy..

message 17: by Philip (new)

Philip (phenweb) Looking at cancellations or postponements of major events is a possible indicator of when it might end but some are due to inability to prepare rather than date and virus activty

message 18: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8082 comments Hot weather's around the corner here. Hopefully, the virus won't like it.

message 19: by W (new)

W I suppose it hasn't been killed in countries which already have hot weather.

J. Gowin | 8004 comments Yeah, this stay at home stuff is gonna cause a lot of births and divorces.

message 23: by G.R. (new)

G.R. Paskoff (grpaskoff) | 258 comments I thought about the birth thing when the quarantines were being mandated. I mean, how else are we supposed to pass the time? ;)

There are always spikes in birth rates 9-12 months following major natural (or man-made) disasters or major sporting event victories, but this is entirely on a different scope. I would be terrified to be a pregnant woman during this pandemic. Regular check ups are very important during all trimesters of pregnancy.

message 24: by J. (new)

J. Gowin | 8004 comments I work with a young woman who is about terminally pregnant. I hope that she and her baby avoid the current pestilence.

I wonder how many from this baby boom will be named after boomer and gen-x grandparents who didn't make it. I'm getting a bit maudlin in my middle age.

J. Gowin | 8004 comments A few years back, I became irritated with the state of my penmanship. To remedy this I bought some workbooks, and taught myself copperplate. (Copperplate is the form of script used on the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.) It was a rewarding process which I recommend.

It turns out that many US public schools have dropped cursive from their curriculum. This means that for many of us, our children and grandchildren will not be able to read our hand writing after we're gone. If you are stuck at home with your spawn, I suggest correcting this oversight. To that end, I have found a series of videos teaching American cursive.

J., I have some old family letters and documents from 100 years ago written in that beautiful handwriting. They actually taught not just cursive but penmanship. I have an old text used to teach penmanship that's been passed down through the family. Great that you can do this.

message 43: by Philip (new)

Philip (phenweb) Also penmanship and letter writing in freehand teach you to be careful and thoughtful before you commit to print. I am guilty of pressing email send or Goodreads Post without fully checking or thinking. When I used to hand draft for a typing pool I had to be more careful with words - I have become lazy with the technology enablers.

Have you used your family's penmanship primer? If not, go for it.

The down side, for me, is that now that I can write in copperplate I keep thinking about binding a hunting and fishing journal in nicely tooled leather. I like the idea that in a century some descendants of my family will be admiring the journal, while they scratch their heads over how much alcohol my idiot friends and me drank on our fishing trips. 🤣

That is an interesting point. Writing things out by hand does have a big effect on how you think about them. I wonder what impact moving away from pen and paper has had and will have on our minds.

I'd rather have 5K inside a cheap wallet :) But then, I'm not a big fan of luxury, furs, diamonds and vertu cell phones. I do dig jets though, as they are functional and avail max freedom of movement
