Lisa (lisathebookworm) I started Wuthering Heights about two weeks ago. After 1-2% into the book I became distracted, read and finished other books. I'm now 8% (page 18) and I don't know if I can go on. Does it get better? So many have rated it high and it is a classic... Typically my rule is to quit a book after 100 pages if I am not into it or don't care for it. I have so many books I want to read so why struggle? This may be the first book I quit under 10%. Did you like/love WH? Does it get better? Thx!

Honestly, I thought the first half was the better half, however you may find the second half to be tops! Finish it anyway as it is a classic and you don't have to attempt it again at some other time out of a feeling of sheer expectation. :)

Allison (allisonbri) | 9 comments I absolutely loved WH for the way it was written. The characters are all abhorrent though, which may make it difficult for some to enjoy it. If you are not enjoying it, don't force yourself to continue. Like you said, there are so many books why struggle with one you are not into?

Mickey Once Nellie starts telling the story, the narrative picks up and it gets a lot better. Mr. Lockwood the first narrator is pretty boring and kind of annoying. If you don't like it then, I'd chuck it.

Amira (liightningbolt) Just get past the first 50 pages, OP, and it should be easier. I'm re-reading it for the second time, and it is taking longer, but I'm definitely enjoying it. The language alone is stunning IMO.

Honestly this is a pretty love it or hate it book. If you hate it now the odds are good you will keep hating it. There are few books I've hated as much as I hated WH. The one reason for pushing yourself through it is that it is on almost all must read book lists. So if reading books from those lists is something you want to do then you might want to push on.

Ivonne Perez Tapia | 8 comments I'm with Amber on this one. When I started reading it I thought it would get better, but I have to say I almost hated it. It is a little two much drama for me, way to intense.

Hemma_MJ This book made me really mad. It's just a lot of stubborn people with cruel streaks who bring all their problems onto themselves. How history repeats itself within the book is frightening.
I can see why it was and still is revolutionary, but that's about it.

Louise Bentley | 3 comments Just read this over last weekend and was really caught up in the characters. The start of the story I found a little slow but agree with another commenter that once Ellen Dean picks up the story it gets much livelier.

I really liked the dialect, that each character has a really distinct voice. Joseph in particular was an awful, cruel, old man and I think the ‘maister’ and the ‘mun’ etc were pretty great indications of his speech.

The descriptions of nature, of place were thoroughly stunning, the setting is so lonely and sparse and yet the characters knowledge of love of the wildlife, of the roaming and noticing. Not much else going on for the characters of course distraction wise.

Would you have been a servant in these times for anything? The drama. The being woken up at all hours by drunks, sassed by impetuous young masters and mistresses. Ellen has such a full life, I loved how though she was fully bidden to do her masters calling she was a throughly moral guide to her charges. She spoke on near equal terms in advising.

The plot of revenge was a bit nuts. Heathcliffe just mental. I mean ok he clearly loved Cathy, he was clearly upset to hear that she thought him beneath her but way to exact your upset on everyone over

Louise Bentley | 3 comments In another way though I guess it speaks about what poverty and service and being beholden does for the human spirit. Ellen it ennobles, she accepts her place and strives to always act morally and for the good of her charges. It guides her.

Heathcliffe’s pride is RUINED and he kicks and fights against expectations. Young Cathy Accepts that to marry sick young Linton will be her duty and get her back to her father. Yes I suppose every single character displays wholly their relation to expectation.

Very dark and despairing, bleak and reflective of the setting. I don’t know what I thought this book was about I thought it would be very romantic given that there are film versions of it (not seen them) but it was horrifyingly desolate. Gothic to a T.

Very much enjoyed and glad I read.

Tay I love Wuthering Heights! I read it in 8th grade. For me, the beginning was hardest to read but I think it really does get better
