the covens of new orleans used to get along. but of course, nothing good lasts forever.

a secret ritual was revealed to another, and then one got word of it, and once everyone knew about it, fights began to break out between the previously allied covens. more secrets were leaked, supposedly by spies. and then the unthinkable happened.

the high priestess of the largest coven in new orleans was murdered. no one knew who it was, but everyone was suspecting each other and everyone was suspicious.

storms are brewing (literally) and the covens seem to be at war. the townies don't suspect anything, but for how long?

are you a witch?

or are you a townie?

whichever you may be, watch your back around here, and stay away from the witch's tree...

while there are covens and solitary witches throughout the world, our story takes place in the fourth ward of new orleans, louisiana.

new orleans has been the heart of voodoo for generations, but in the late seventeeth century, it became home to witches as well. this was because the salem witch trials caused all of the true witches to flee to a safer place.

while voodoo queens and witches do get along (occasionally), our story will not include the voodoo queens. since they are not allied in any way, the voodoo covens are not going to be helping in any way due to the fear that betrayal will occur between their own people.

witches have been around for as long as people have. but, much like race, they have also been discriminated against for thousands of years. one prime example is the salem witch trials of 1692.

witches can be essentially described as humans with major gifts, also known as powers or abilities.

while witches can be male or female, it is extremely rare for a male to be born, and as such witches usually don't reproduce.

being a witch is impossible to achieve unless you're born one, and the 'trait' is hereditary, showing up in random points throughout the generation.

all witches are immortal, but that only protects them from aging. provided they are not protecting themselves, they can be killed in any other way. any witch can do spells and make potions that can do a variety of things, but all witches are born with these standard powers that can be practiced immediately without incantations or tools:

divination: witches are able to use water or other mostly clear objects to see the future and occasionally the past.
elemental control: witches are able to manipulate one element based on their personality. the control is very limited. i will choose which element your character gets once they're finished.
healing: witches are able to heal others by projecting their own energy into them. this does not work if the person is dead.
object summoning: witches are able to summon objects to their hands or space around them. the item must be very lightweight and non-living. this does not work on others' magical objects. they can also send objects other places.
sensing: witches are able to sense other witches, even in a large crowd.
telekinesis: witches are able to make an object magically float or move around. while it can be used on living beings, it is frowned upon.
telepathy: witches are able to communicate telepathy with other witches.
teleportation: witches are able to teleport to other places, but the process takes time (roughly ten seconds to a few minutes depending on where you're going) and can be stopped mid-port. witches can actually get stuck in the spiritual world if something interrupts their teleporting.

each witch is also born with one special power that only they and one other person can use. these two people usually do not have any type of relation or connection.

most witches use these tools:

altar: there are usually two altars a witch uses. the first is the coven altar, where the entire coven performs rituals. the other is the witch's personal altar, where they perform personal rituals.
athame: the athame can be used to cast the magic circle, call the "quarters" or elements, and is part of many openings of rituals, weddings, or initiation rites. athames are regularly personalized with runes and sigils carved into the handle.
bell: bells are usually hung outside of a witch's or coven's door to ward off evil spirits or energies.
book of shadows: this is a witch's personal book where they record their rituals and spells, among other things. covens each have a universal book of shadows called a grimoire.
broom: the broom is used for cleansing ritual areas, hence the term "making a clean sweep". many witches and all of the covens keep a broom brushy side up by their door to protect the home from unwanted outside energies. witches are able to cast a spell on brooms to make them an object that allows flight, whereas otherwise the spell wouldn't be powerful enough (to lift just the witch).
candles: candles are used, like most other tools, to ward of spirits or to strengthen a spell's energy. here is a list of candle colors and their properties.
cauldron: cauldrons are used for mixing potions and water scrying, and are most popularly used in the mador coven.
chalice: the chalice is sometimes passed around a coven's circle so each participant may take a sip from the cup. this is a usually bonding experience. chalices are also used for private scrying.
herbs: herbs are used for many purposes in potions. here is a list of herbs and their properties.
incense: incense is burned after and before rituals to cleanse the area, and is used to get rid of unwanted spirits.
oils: oils are also used in potions. here is a list of oils and their uses.
pentacle: the altar pentacle is usually a disk or plate of metal or wood inscribed with the five pointed star in a circle. this is set upon the altar for concentration in magical rituals.
stones: stones can be charged for different purposes or set in the bottom of potions to enhance its power. here is a list of stones and their properties.
wand: wands are used in ways similar to an athame, and can be decorated the same way. they are usually made of different woods for different purposes. here is a list of woods and their purposes.

covens are groups of witches that perform rituals together and share spells. they usually all live in one large house, most frequently plantation homes. witches do not have to be a part of a coven, and those solitary witches are in the best position during this 'war'.

terra coven: the terra coven was founded in the late 1800's and mainly focuses on earth-related spells, and favors making potions from herbs found naturally in nature.

aeris coven: the aeris coven is the oldest coven, having been founded when the witches first migrated south. they mainly practice air-related spells.

ignis coven: the ignis coven was originally a part of the aeris coven, but they branched off and created their own coven in the mid-1700's, and the two covens originally were wary of each other. eventually they allied, but when the terra coven showed up they became neutral, until today. they mainly practice fire-related spells.

mador coven: the mador coven is the newest coven, only surfacing in the early 1900's and completing the elemental circle. they mainly practice water-related spells, as you may have guessed.
