YA Addicted Book Club discussion

This is a buddy read asked for by HeatherH and Jess of the Mistborn series. I love this series and look forward to jumping in and hearing their thoughts.
It will start approximately April 30th with for anyone else who is interested in joining.

I've started reading and realised how much I missed Sanderson's solid epic fantasy!
Read till chapter 3 (have too much to do today, so I continue reading tomorrow and on weekend for sure).

So excited to hear your thoughts. Love this book so much. If only I had time for a reread

End of part 1
(view spoiler)[ So the only other Sanderson I've experienced is Skyward/Starsight - both of which I absolutely loved. I was, for whatever silly reason, nervous about starting this - thinking I wouldn't like it. Happy to report that so far I'm in love!

I'm really adoring Kelsier so much! And Vin and his interactions are so great - I like seeing her learn slowly to trust after everything she has been through so far. I'm curious to learn more about Kelsier and Marsh's relationship and why they dislike each other so.

Also, the way they manipulate metals and such is really cool! And the visual I have of the mist and them in the mist cloaks is awesome! (hide spoiler)]

The mist kind of gives me Shadow and Bone vibes for some reason.

Chapters 1-6
Had to do a small reread on the 1st of May of the first 3 chapters.
I love this book and definitely going to read the whole series. I've missed this atmosphere since I finished and re-read the Stormlight Archive series and Elantris and was a bit nervous to start the Mistborn series, because I was afraid to be disappointed. (Recently I finished reading a second book - Firefight - of his other series in a different genre and didn't enjoy reading much).
But The Final Empire indeed has this unique atmosphere of his epic fantasy series, wholesome world, complicated story, mysterious parts and much much more of Sanderson I love.

Kelsier reminded me of Kaladin so much! He is awesome. I love that he is not one of the nobility, but a skaa. I also love that about Vyn (being a half-skaa).
Though I assume it could have changed as I progress reading and maybe the mystery of their bloodline uncovers into being a nobility. But that's also fine, because my main issue here is that they are not those typical rich heroes, but struggling, complicated characters and as the story goes they grow into awesome people.
The story seems pretty natural, goes smoothly and I don't have those feelings like I had with starting reading SJM's Throne of Glass trilogy, where all that "she is beautiful and so skillful and so smart and so ... whatever as hell" was in every single chapter.

Glad you're loving it too! Other than Skyward and sequel, this is my first of his so I'm excited to hear that his epic fantasy ones all have this type of atmosphere!

Yeah, if you enjoy the atmosphere in this book, I highly recommend you to give a try to his other epic fantasy series. They are gorgeous!

I need to read the rest of his too Jess. I have been collecting them now though. Trying to decide on the best reading order as there are so many choices!

@Brittany I was having the same issue and didn't pick his books for so long. But one day I just decided to pick any of them and it was the first book of The Stormlight Archive series :) And never regretted the choice.

Absolutely. I loved the original mistborn trilogy. And the first of the second era. Just have to decide which one is next!

Forgot to post here yesterday and today's been hectic. Got through ch 15, end of part two. I definitely agree with you Jess (view spoiler)[ I love that they aren't the rich, popular type of characters who are usually the heroes. I adore when underdogs get their day. Still really loving this so far and anxious to get back to it though that will likely be tomorrow. (hide spoiler)]

I love the last chapters of the first part, where there is some information on misborn's cloaks (interesting idea) and of course the magic part of the story is so unique and detailed! I've only met such a detailed and thoughtful description of magic in Sanderson's and Patrick Rothfuss's works.
And I also want to learn more about Kelsier's past and his relations with his brother. It's obvious complicated and must be interesting.

Chapter 19 finished
I enjoy this book so much! Especially after reading a couple of disappointing ones.
The plot is so interesting, it drives me away every time I seat to read. And I catch myself reading much more than I've actually planned for workdays.

Here we go! The first really dangerous action and I love it, all parts of it. The part with the inquisitors, the part where Kel and Vin escaped and most of all the part where they say even mistborns are not invincible. I love this about Sanderson. His characters are always so natural, so complicated, not superheroes, but heroes with just enough powers, wit and humanity, with lives filled with both joys and hardships. The kind of characters you expect to meet in the epic fantasy.

Yeah, it is, but quite slow :) After a small break I continue reading finally! This is one of my favourite books of this year so far.

Finally found my way back here. Through ch 20 so far.

(view spoiler)[ I definitely agree about Sanderson's 'heroes'. I love that they are flawed and know it; that they are, and feel, as much human as you and I as far are the ups and downs they go through.

I really love the metal system and it has been fun learning our way through that. In this bit of part 3 that I got through, the focus shifted to more of the interactions with the nobles and I do find that quite fascinating as well. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ The careless cruelty with which the small boys throat was cut.. That scene, though brief, was heart wrenching and powerful as a display of the noble's lack of regard for those they deem beneath them. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Totally agree about the scene you've mentioned. Such a real thing even in our world. It could be not so cruel, but the meaning is the same as how some people treat others considering on their race, social status or their fortune, etc. (hide spoiler)]

Those final parts made me want to dive into the next book right away. But I have so many books to finish till I actually can get back to this series.
(view spoiler)[What an ending it was! First Mash died, then Kelsier, I was so sad. But then Sanderson surprised me with Mash being an inquisitor and appearing at the perfect moment to help Vin to kill the Lord Ruler. And the secret behind his immortality was quite a thing! I expected something like that and didn’t want it to be something more ‘godlike’.
I’m also glad that it wasn’t only Vin who killed him. Otherwise it could be something like ‘she suddenly developed some great powers and learned how to use it and killed him by herself’ and actually it would disappoint me. But again Sanderson managed to write the story in a natural way.
I believe later she’s going to develop more abilities and become extremely powerful but it shouldn't happen in a blink of an eye.
And also I don’t believe Kel actually died. I really want him to come back in the next book. At least I hope he’ll come back. (hide spoiler)]

Sanderson's writing style is so incredibly 'easy' to fall into. Loved every minute of this.

(view spoiler)[ We have pretty similar thoughts overall. I was devastated with Kelsier's death scene and am holding out hope he returns but also just not sure he will. Mash coming back at the moment he did was awesome and I too am so glad there wasn't some cheesy explanation for it. The answers to how to defeat the Lord Ruler was perfection, but I am really curious to see what happens with regard to his final comments to them and how he was protecting them from something worse.

I was worried she was going to walk away at the end but I'm so glad she got that bit of a 'happy ending' so to speak. Also loved that she found out her brother kept her safe to the very end. Looking forward to seeing how she grows and her powers progress in the rest of the series! (hide spoiler)]

I feel the same about the ending. Feels like it's totally not simple and there is lots lots more to the story.
I also agree with your thoughts on her brother and a pinch of happy ending. I with they could be happy afterwards. But who knows where the story will develop in the next books.
